Did I Push RPMs Too High in 4Lo?

    3 Inch Lift w/ LT285/70R17 Tires
Had quite a bit of snow recently. Got stuck. First tried to use just 4L. Spun the tires. Kept trying to get unstuck. RPMs got up to 5,000 for probably about ten to 15 seconds. That didn't work. Then tried Rear Differential Lock Button. The RPMs got up to 4,000 for about five seconds. Same result. Then turned it off and tried again with just 4L.

It could be just my imagination running away with me, but I feel the vehicle is running differently. I believe I am detecting slippage when I press on the accelerator. It's not running as smoothly as before, and I believe the difference is noticeable.

My two questions are, (1) Did I mess up the transmission by getting the RPMs so high and spinning the tires in 4L like a moron? And (2) what sort of diagnostic test should I ask the Toyota Dealership to run to detect an issue if there is in fact one?

Bought 2018 Tacoma TRD with Off-Road package. Have owned it for three years. Put a three inch lift with LT 285/70R17 tires on the truck about a year and a half ago.

Odometer currently at ~80k miles. Almost all very easy miles. I literally probably take the truck off road maybe once every six months for a couple of miles of moderately difficult terrain that requires 4H.

Truck has been serviced according to recommended maintenance plan religiously every 5k miles. Vehicle has performed perfectly thus far with zero complaints from me.

    Thanks for y'all's help.

    Hmmmm.....hard to say.

Have you learned the lesson about spinning tires?

Lesson: Once they spin, more speed doesn't help.

I don't know about the third gens, but these trucks are generally pretty robust. Also (generally, but not always) the computer systems won't let you do too much that the mechanical pieces can't handle. If the tires were just spinning around, there probably wasn't very much strain on your drivetrain.

I'd bet you are okay and it is all in your head. Tough to say without being there / driving your truck, etc.

If you weren't banging it off the rev limiter then you're fine.

There a rev limiter on these engines, it'll sound like it's missing hard, won't blow up. Didn't hurt anything.

The only thing you really should worry about when spinning the tires too hard while stuck, is sudden traction....sudden traction while spinning the tires at high RPM is a great way to break things.
