I went to change my oil this morning and removed the oil filter and let it drain. I then proceeded to fill the engine with 6 quarts of OEM oil. Fired the truck up and let it run for about 5 min then checked the oil. I noticed it was high then realized there should have been a lot more old oil in the oil pan. I don't know why I completely forgot to actually drain the oil from the truck's oil pan.

Is my engine going to be jacked up with it idling for 5ish minutes with twice the amount of recommended oil?

TL : DR: Let truck idle for about 5 minutes with 12 quarts in it.

Just drain it all out and refill with 6 new quarts. (I'd change the filter, too, but that's just me)

    Done!

Did you drain it and run if for 5 minutes without any oil. That may balance it out.

Seriously, did you drain it and refill with proper amount, maybe even just a slight bit less. Then run it.

Have you drained the 12 qts already OP? Do that first then just add the 6 qts. Lets hope that the 5 min were not enough to cause damage

I use to change the oil on my Wrangler all of the time. I don't know what the hell I was thinking this morning though.

Yes I drained it completely then added the correct amount.

Yes I drained all of it.

The only issue with too much oil would be the crankshaft would froth up the oil and maybe, just maybe that frothed oil could've been circulated. But since oil is pressurized and air is compressible, IMO there should've been no harm. Just drain and refill to the correct volume and just keep an eye or ear to any new issues. Lesson learned!

It will be fine. Oil probably got aerated by the crank, but you also didn’t drive it. Drain - refill with proper amount and go on. Now if you had left it in there and driven it for any amount of time I would say yes you could have caused damage, but you didn’t.

Have you driven the truck after the drain & refill? I think you will be fine. The oil pressure did not go to high as you only ideled the truck. Take it for a spin

Why run it for 5 minutes though? When I change mine I let it run for maybe 30 seconds to make sure nothing leaks... done.

To the OQ, your probably fine since you didn't actually drive it and it was a short amount of time. Sucks man

Yea you dont run a truck for 5 mins after an oil change. 30 seconds max and I doubt there's any damage. Do the oil change again and make sure you are clear on what you are doing this time.

I doubt you’ll have an issue. Like others said the oil was probably aerated. You’re just lucky you didn’t drive it. You’d have problems then. Idling not such a big deal. You live and you learn. I guarantee you’ll never let it happen again.

You can drain tranny and double fill oil and drive 50 miles. I've seen it done on here twice. Take your time and follow a checklist if you must... Even pilots do it lol.
