This reminds me of a similar but far more catastrophic story. Back in flight school a friend took his Camaro to Walmart to have the oil changed (mistake number one). They forgot to put the plug back in. He never noticed until the engine seized one day. Luckily Walmart, after some prodding, paid for the new engine. Good thing they didn't fight it, how do you prove who left the plug out?

By the way this is not the story about the "friend" that is actually about myself. But I've done lots of other dumb stuff.

Dealer did the this to a friend of mine. Vehicle was driven home and he noticed it leaking on his garage floor. He pumped out 6 quarts and the dealer admitted mistake and re-did oil change.

Net volume has nothing to do with jack. Once the cavity under the piston fills up it becomes a hydraulic cylinder. If it can’t vacate the cylinder fast enough you have issues. This isn’t a theoretical discussion. This exact scenario has happened to many engines over the years. Depending on the engine design if there isn’t enough flow between one cylinder to another and boom. Oil can’t move from one location to the other fast enough and you pressurize the underside of the piston.

Funny how real life consequences that have actually happened are impossible to people with an internet connection and an opinion. Then again some believe the holocaust didn’t happen, a man never stepped foot on the moon and the world is not round. Just because you have never seen it and on the surface your analogy seems solid doesn’t mean you are right. Calling events that have actually happened as mostly bullshit means you are mostly ignorant of historical events.

Just keep an eye on it OP. Let us know in a few weeks if it broke anything. This will be good information for the next person that comes in with the same mistake. If it doesn't break anything in your truck, it most likely would not break anything in anyone else's in the same scenario. Anything that could break due to overfill will be really obvious. Blown rings and and seals make themselves known quick. If you go between this oil change and the next without having to top off or without blue smoke, you probably haven't hurt anything. Good luck!

If it can't evacuate the oil fast enough from a piston coming down, it would catastrophically fail. Like a hole in the block. It didn't. I understand this has happened before. In the 80s I blew a head gasket in my '70 Camaro. We drained over 3 gallons of milkshake out of the motor. No seals blew, no leaks, no hydrolock. Just a spin rod bearing.

I understand 3 gallons is what OP had in his motor. It isn't hurt. Want to bet on it?

I didn't say I've never seen it. You did.

You are not the only person to ever turn a wrench. Or race cars/motorcycles. I rebuilt my first car engine almost 31 years ago. A dirtbike was a few years before that.

Lulz at the seriousness in this thread.

For the OP, as this thread has shown lots of speculation. The only thing to do is drain the oil, fill it with new and see what happens. Most likely, you will know in 100 miles.

Look for leaks. If all is well and it makes the next oil change, I'd stop worrying about it.

I think it'll probably be okay, but it might have hurt the seals and there is some chance of mechanical damage. I really think that if it was bad and "hydraulically locking" the engine, you'd probably already know.

Besides all that, there's not a lot of point worrying about it. Just see what it does.

I really wasn't singling anyone out. It's no problem though. We've all done the same thing. I was just feeling more mellow at the time of my post. :D

He stated he dropped the filter and let it drain. he never removed an oil plug...

Even this thread has value, imo.

@josh0724 made a mistake and posted about it. Props to him, since many people wouldn't be so forthright.

I once drained my oil pan, removed and replaced the filter and proceeded to refill, forgetting to replace the drain plug- the big pool of oil in the driveway was a dead giveaway- the only way to never make a mistake is to never actually do anything, lol

I would guess that anybody reading this thread that actually changes their own oil has learned something from the OP's mistake and the ensuring posts, whether they realize it or not.

    My $.02

I was only condescending because the OP is getting attacked and suddenly everyone is a damn automotive engineer with a who's dick is bigger contest.

I have been on the receiving end of TW's shit storm so I know how it is for the OP. Folk's need to lighten up and READ the posts before they comment useless information.

The OP's truck is LIKELY fine. it's driving and not leaking. we're good here.

I am not personally attacking the OP, and am also not personally participating in the shitstorm. I was personally offering help as I have been for the 6 years that I have been on these forums. If I misread it then that is on me, but I DO NOT need your disrespectful attitude towards me pointing that out. The OP is a big boy and can speak for himself if I misconstrued what he was saying there Mr. Scholastic.

We're done here, so good day to you.
