    Ah!

There's a lot of things that should be in the Subaru lineup there were in the past. If there was as WRX Hatch in 2017 . . .

The warning on the Q-Tip box also says "do not use in ears". It's all about limiting liability.

Normally I would not pollute a thread, but instead of the popcorn placeholder I posted this pic, as it's Friday.

To some of the Armchair Engineers in here ....

As an Engineer that worked and designed/redesigned things for many Automotive companies over the years (since the 80's) and as a member of SAE...
let me clear up some of the misinformation on TW and in this thread.

Without writing a novel .... I will say Google it and come back when you can understand it... but will summarize it by saying...

Our trucks are NOT 4 wheel drive (by the strictest definition). And how I think some people are interpreting it...

    They are "Part time 4wd"

The front and read differentials are "open" which means not locked together.

The transfer case is "locked" otherwise it would be called "All Wheel Drive " (which is also a very misleading name).

If you turn off traction control, ATRAC etc.

And get stuck in the mud.... only two wheels will turn.... 1 front and 1 back.... (because of open differentials).

"Real" 4WD as most people interpret it... all 4 wheels would be turning....

With a part time 4wd vehicle like the Tacoma,
I could put 1" smaller diameter tires on one side (but not front vs back)
and engage and disengage 4wd all day on a paved road, (with drag slicks for traction) going straight,
and not apply any load on the drive-train whatsoever...

Reason why turning with a locked transfer case becomes a issue in high traction areas is the turning radius between the front and the rear tires,
drive across some mud and snow and take a turn, you will see the front and rear wheels do not follow the same path.
So the # of rotations won't match between the front and the back, and the transfer case is gears are locked together = stress.

    So to sum it up,

Any part time 4wd vehicle you can drive straight for longer than you can find a straight road without causing ANY stress to the drivetrain.

Any TRUE 4wd (locked front and rear differentials), assuming same size tires, tire pressure etc can ALSO drive in a straight line without causing stress to the driveline, but ANY turns will stress the axles and differentials more than the transfer case.

Sorry to the people that are saying otherwise,
or misunderstanding the "CYA" in parts of the manual, (CYA= Cover Your Ass 'cause people are stupid)
    YOU ARE WRONG
without a shadow of a doubt,
please stop giving very wrong information out to people.

My bet for the cause was in @tonered 's post further up.

If it was the front diff, OP would have had to miss some serious noise for the ring gear bolts to get loose and break the gears.

....It probably was, but it'd be cooler if it was a mismatched ratio blew up the TC.

In other news, one time my friend blew up their transmission activating 4WD on pavement. :stirthepot:

At this point I could not even begin to say with any certainty what caused this failure.
I agreed that my guess was in agreement with another person's guess based on seeing other failure outside of designed operating parameters.
    Lol

For all I/we know at this point....

He could have run over a wooden leg transvestite
whose leg got wrapped around the driveshaft and locked up the truck,
their breast implant hit the transfer case,
and blew up with such a bang,
they flew off into the bushes,
and it was the left tit that left that big splash mark on the muffler there...
    :notsure:

Gear ratio mismatch (major) would be instantly obvious,
even a _tiny_ variation in ratios becomes obvious within a mile or two, the truck gets sluggish and bogs as it twists up the driveshafts before something lets go with a bang. You will feel it.

It's also possible that there was a chemical problem with the steel, inclusion in the steel, heat treating issue and a tooth let go or the ring gear cracked/split.
Bearing failure... drain plug not put in... etc etc

If it's Auburn gear, they use to be very good. I have not been there in about 12 years.
