Very true. My guess is that they did not, esp after the mismatched ratios was shot down. I'm betting on something loose / jammed somewhere or a weird gear failure.

You didn't do anything wrong man! I've accidently left me truck in 4hi on pavement plenty of times! These guys think these trucks are made of thin glass!!! Its a truck, and a TACOMA at that! They can handle a little abuse! What a bunch of pansies...

I didn’t read all the replies, so apologies if the cause has already been determined. I had a similar thing happen to me. Bit of a long story, I drove in 2WD but with the front diff engaged. Problem was I had forgotten a few things:

    1. I forgot the front diff was engaged
    2. I forgot I didn’t finish adding oil to the front diff.

These two mistakes resulted in my front diff exploding in under 3 miles. I image if I was actually in 4wd I wouldn’t have made it that far. I spun the pinion bearing and cracked the diff housing. Was scary AF because I had just merged onto the highway at rush hour and the front wheels locked up. I was lucky to not get smashed by traffic.

Yeah, so when people read in it not to use 4wd on dry pavement, they will assume doing just that, for a few hundred feet will cause catastrophic failure...

Think ring gear jammed? (FOD or maybe loose bolt on the ring gear attachment)

in 2wd the spiders and side gears are still spinning (per my very foggy memory), so thinking it must be on the Ring Gear or Pinion Gear (or driveshaft)

4Hi for the aisles, 2Hi for the turns, and 4Lo for the wheelchair ramp?

Before the 2LM, I was getting some miles when I needed to here:

My guess is something backed out. Pinion nut, ring gear bolt, bearing cap bolt, etc.

Yessir. My guess also. Ring gear bolt backed out or a sheared / flawed tooth.

Yes. The spiders whirl all the time. With that and the much smaller lube volume, I will always change the lube in both diffs at the same time. The 2Hi temp numbers that some folks have posted are pretty surprising.

Thank you I appreciate it! I think I’m gonna be okay transportation wise I’m just concerned for my truck at this point. River City differential in rancho/sac. They seem like a reputable shop and my friend referred me, his Nova has been driving around for years no issues. They had bad ass crawling rigs, and everything in between, when I took it there. I am optimistic and I think this is a fluke.
