Did too much ATF drain out?

A few days ago I was changing my ATF on my 2005 Tacoma and everything went well except I needed to order a crush washer for the overfill plug. When I originally changed it, I added 4 quarts of new ATF and then I waited for a small trickle to come out of the overfill while the temp was at 116° F. About 1-1.5 quarts came out.

Well today the washer came. I thought it would be easy to change it out (my truck was outside so the ATF was at 120°). I unscrewed the overflow plug, and this time about 3 quarts pour out of the transmission until it started to trickle again. How is this possible?

The only driving I did was out of the garage, up and down the street, and into the driveway. Is there something wrong with the overflow hole?

I don't want to start my truck yet just in case there is not enough fluid in there, but is there a way I can safely check? It just seems like way too much oil came out after I already had a trickle. Thanks for the help!

Was the truck running when you removed the plug?
    If not, that’s your problem.

    Time to start all over.

Have you checked your engine oil level, lately?

im going to bet you pulled the drain plug rather than the overflow plug.... cus 3 quarts is about what you would get out of the trans pan cold from the DRAIN plug.

I'm have the opposite experience today but I'm wonder similar things about how much ATF comes out when pulling the drain plug.

I got in an accident so I know I lost some ATF fluid through replacing the Trans Oil Cooler. Not sure how much fluid I lost...

Today, I pulled the drain plug and got 3-1/2 quarts out. The fluid was pretty dark.

I put 4 quarts back in. Ran the truck, checked the scan tool. The Trans temp got to 99 and I pulled the overflow plug...nothing but a drip.

Cooled down, an hour later added another quart. Ran the truck, slowly shifted thru each gear. It felt good. I checked the Trans temp was at 105. I pulled the overflow plug and ....nothing but a drip.

I gotta wait till Monday to get more ATF from the Dealer.....

So...Just keep going one quart at a time till I get a gush and then trickle?

Shouldn't I have only gotten less than 1 quart out of the drain, or nothing....considering I'm 5 quarts in and I'm getting nothing out the overflow?

FWIW my overflow cap is marked with florescent pink paint marker. Wasn't from me but the previous owner, It's a good idea thou. I should find one of those markers too.

I've seen quite a few posts on here about how the trans fluid can be low coming out of the factory. That could be the case in your situation. The times I've done a drain and fill or when I traded the stock cooler for an aftermarket one, I purposely added more AT fluid that drained out or thought needed to be added. It keeps me from having to crawl under the truck more than I need (want) to.

Whenever I read something like this it just frustrates me that there’s not a dipstick. It would just make things so much easier

There was, on older models. The A750 trans did have a dip stick on certain older models. I even feel like I saw a writeup here on how to add it on.

Unfortunately most all manufacturers have gone to no dipstick or at least not the conventional dipstick, at least with Toyota you can check it at a reasonable temperature.

Ford and GM want you to check theirs at a scalding 195-215F and in the case of Ford the catyletic converter is right next to the check/fill plug for bonus burns.
