I think it's a structural/material cracking issue and not a gasket issue. A sealer might plug a crack, but the plastic is still deteriorating as time goes by. Sometimes the only thing holding the pipe together is the tension on the two ends. I ordered the OEM metal replacement pipe for my 2011 over a month ago, and I am still waiting for the part. The leak is very small so I can still drive the vehicle, but I don't want to push my luck. If your vehicle is your only source of transportation, then it might be a good idea to order a replacement part in advance. There are aftermarket replacements, but I wouldn't take a chance because of the work and expense (dealer wanted to charge over $1000 , NO WAY) involved in replacement. Plastic and high heat exposure over time don't go together.

I think the problem occurs in the higher mileage vehicles (over 100,000) and some people might not know they have a small leak.

Mine has been leaking for awhile, Im at 99,600 on a 2016. Topped off my coolant just once in the span of 6 years of ownership. Def have a pink coral reef growing under the truck, quoted 2118.36 yesterday. So Subaru stop leak or live with it since it isn't fully broken yet. I really do not want to spend that much to fix this, and with no guaranteed fix. The part is the same from what I have learned

Found this out when they replaced my bypass years back....radiator had the smallest of leaks, which they couldn't find, and it was replaced too.

Nope! Mine had somewhere in the neighborhood of 30k miles. I've read all (or most of) the threads related to this issue and I've never heard of one "catastrophically" giving way and leaving someone stranded. Mine had been leaking for a long time apparently and I never even noticed. The service tech at the dealer found it during a routine service. Both issues were covered under warranty. I currently have about 50k miles on the truck and I hope it never re-occurs as it's an expensive, pain in the ass fix.

The dealer tried to charge me over MSRP for the parts! Wanted $165/hr labor. I found the parts at a discount online from another Toyota dealer. Also, found an excellent mechanic who said he would do the job for $325 if I furnished the parts. Luckily, I can drive my Avalon while I wait for the repair. I have over 125,000 miles.

Makes sense since the pipe isn't under that much pressure.
