need to learn more about this stuff
I pick up my truck tomorrow.

Any advice on extended warranties? Did you get yours through toyota? 3rd party? Did you even get it? What did you pay for it? I have never bought a new car before and could use some advice.

No! And why would I? It's a Toyota! Kidding aside I would pocket the money and use it for any repairs if and when needed down the road. Mine is ten years old 115,000 plus. A wheel cylinder is the only thing its ever needed!

They WILL pressure you, and use scare tactics. When we bought my wife's car the financing officer pissed me off (wouldn't let us out and kept the scare tactics going non stop) we bought a warranty and I called and cancelled it the next day:thumbsup: End result, we are several months ahead on payments:D Because the warranty refund went directly to the creditor.

???? They earn commission on extended warranty sales. Don't know why they wouldn't try to sell you one.

Okay I'll be the (first) odd ball....
I bought the Toyota Platinum warranty. (7year)
They showed me a list of things the standard warranty did not cover. (More like a color transparency overlay chart, fancy salesman chit right there)
I was pretty surprised at some of the things that were not covered.
Price did not seem bad.(don't remember cost) I know it's a Toyota. Have owned a Toyota in the passed (Wife's RAV4).
That and it being a new model year (2016).

I say check the list mentioned and judge the cost.

Nope. Finance guy tried real hard to sell me one but I refused. I've never had any major issues with the 5 cars I've owned. Knock on wood, maybe I've just been lucky.

I got the same purchasing a barely used Tacoma, tried to shut him up as all 4 columns of warranty levels had prices well beyond what I would even consider. He then says we at (let's just say one of the bigger Nascar teams) are a full disclosure company... I knew I wanted nothing to do with it when I asked him if I said no today could I buy next week and was told no.

Hell 2 weeks later I cut the shoulder on one of the Michelin LTX M/S tires (interesting to note the spare was also a LTX M/S). Would have had to have chosen the most expensive of their warranty options to get that covered. Went to my usual place Discount Tire to get it replaced and because they are a Michelin dealer they pro rated it with and warrantied the other tires for nearly the same price as one month of that extended warranty.

Wife bought an extended warranty once on an old Jeep Cherokee she had. Many years down the road, the dealership replaced an A/C compressor free of charge. Cost was more than what she paid for the warranty.

That said, hers is the ONLY story I have ever heard that was a win with an extended warranty.

I don't buy extended warranties. If my 2017 DCSB has a ton of issues while it's under warranty then I will trade it off when the warranty ends. If it's trouble free (fingers crossed), I'll roll the dice and keep it a few more years/miles. When it starts "nickle and diming me", it's gone. Chances are being a Toyota, even in an early trade I won't lose as much as that warranty would have cost. I don't keep trucks long enough typically to worry about it.

    YMMV

On a Jeep I might get the extended warranty, actually I did, but I talked them down on the price. Everything is negotiable, finance guy makes his commision or bonus on the warranty, undercoating, paint protection, service plans, etc. On a Toyota Tacoma I wouldn't buy it, it would probably be a waste of money, it's a gamble that I'm willing to take. My 2006 has only had wearable parts wear out, things that a warranty wouldn't cover anyway.

If you are buying a Harley I would recommend it too. Personal experience.

I get my extended warranty through Geico. Costs like $6 a month on my payment ($46 every 6 months I believe) and covers everything that could go wrong. $250 deductible, but covers mods and accidental issues.

Nope, if they try to pressure you, start asking "why, do these things have lots of problems I should be worried about? Maybe I should rethink my purchase if it's a junker......". I bet they'll drop it real quick. :D

You can purchase it separately from corporate before your original warranty expires anyways.

I know all the guys at my Toyota dealership and I bought the 10 year 120000 mile warranty for 1700 bucks that usually costs 2600.00.feel like it is a piece of mind while owning my truck.

oh also I bought it for my 2016 and traded that truck in for the 2017 and I got the remainder of that warranty that I didn't use back in a check anyway so why not.

I kept telling them no but they kept tweaking my numbers until it worked out for me. It ended up costing me an extra 10 bucks a month so I'm not too mad at it.

rather pay 100 deductible that pay 900 to 1000 for repair and have to shit the money out.i think 1700 dollars is worth the 10 years

Bought one for my Honda CRV and came out ahead by around $1500 over the cost
Bought one for my Ford F150 and if they had been able to diagnose the clusterfuck that happened to my engine it would have saved me about $4k.

When the time comes I'll probably buy one for my Tacoma when the factory one runs out. The finance guy tried to pressure us into buying it on top of the regular warranty. If my wife hadn't been there (my voice of reason) I would have asked for my truck's keys back and walked out on the sale out of sheer principle. I've done a lot of stupid shit out of being a stubborn bastard.
