so did I, took the lowest miles 75K enough for maui. 5 or 6 years in and even if it is just a power window breaks it will be wort it let alone a major thing like A/C or ECU.

I would never buy the extended warranty. After 45 to 50K the truck is gone (sold) if not before. My last truck (12' TRD Tundra) was just getting ready to be sold but I hit the mail box in front of my house and really f***ed up one side. Sold it retail "as is" less the lowest repair quote. The extended warranty would have done me no good as the Tundra only had one minor issue (leaking A/C line) which was repaired under the normal warranty. The dealer tried to get me to buy the extended warranty ($2300) and made a big deal about the free service intervals. I knew then I didn't need it as I WILL NOT let a Toyota dealer do the routine service (oil change/tire rotation/fluid checks/air and cabin filters, etc.). They usually put the "low man" or "newbie" in the service bays to do that. The good techs are reserved for the major issues.

This thread inspired me to look into returning my extended warranty and prepaid maintenance. They got me good, but I get the last laugh now that they will have to return the commission they made off of me.:oldglory:

    thats true,
When you pay 2650 for 8yr 100k it's a bad thing. boy did I get suckered. I'll probably buy one for a decent price in two years. And i'm getting rid of the 1k dollar pre paid maintenance deal too. I'd rather pay for it in cash in the future for a decent price than finance it.

sorry I noticed that right before you replied. 2650. And let me clarify that I think they are a great idea to have, IF you get a decent price for it.

I just checked USAA's extended warranty, and it includes things like road side assistance, towing, lodging, rental vehicle, etc. 5 years 100,000 miles for under $900, I may actually buy it because I average around 28,000 miles a year.

People seem to be leery of third party warranties, but if you do your research I am sure you can weed out the crappy ones. From my personal experience with dealership "manufacturer" maintenance and repair, I often feel I get better service at friggin' Tires Plus/Tire Kingdom and the like.

This is another thing to be careful about; compare your expected vehicle use against the terms of the warranty.

Based on your post, assuming this is a new vehicle, you will time out of a 100k warranty after 3.6 years. So, you are really buying only a 6 month extension from the manufacturers warranty. Not a whole lot of value there, IMO.

Always be aware of the belly-up date of your new vehicle warranty, and book an appointment just short of that to get every little thing fixed.

I thought it was 3 years/36k whichever comes first for manufacturer's?

Isn't it which ever comes first 36k miles or 3 years? Therefor he would be extending his warranty by two years/60k miles?

I did a bit of digging on USAA's coverage, and there are mixed reviews on it, the coverage is actually provided by Assurant.

Yup, good point. So with the example given the extra warranty would be good for years 1.3 - 3.6.

It would be helpful to get a lawyer's opinion of these contracts, just for the fun of it. I would think they exclude stuff like wear & tear, owners neglect, acts of God, who knows. I see on this forum some of the struggles people have getting Toyota to accept some new vehicle warranty claims (the one poor person who drove on a beach...etc).

I'm a complete cynic; I'd guess it would be too often like pulling impacted teeth to get repairs actually covered some years down the road.

I had forgotten until I read this, but the last new car I bought was a new accord for my daughter last fall. The dealership I bought it from includes a "free lifetime powertrain" warranty with every new car they sell. I'm guessing that this is a bit like a jewelry store who incudes a "rainy day" policy on wedding rings. It's a cheap insurance policy the business can buy, and makes for a great promotional tool.

Interesting though because I would imagine this arrangement would kill most extended warranty sales there (super high margin stuff..). Now I have to find out more about this from the Honda dealer...

Obviously, it's a personal preference but allow me this: IF you do purchase an extended warranty on anything - purchase that manufacture's warranty ONLY. My wife worked for a non-mfg warranty company and for over 3 years they NEVER once paid out. They found a way to deny each and every claim.
I did buy the 100k mile warranty for my '17 simply because of the "electronics package". I've seen too many electrical items go wonky for no reason. The cost of the xtnd-wrnty would cover two trouble-shooting hours, never mind the electrical unit. Piece of mind for me.

Crap - I should've said - - - my wife had NOTHING to do with denying any claims! She simply worked the telephone. Dinna blame her for being the hard-ass of the company. But what she learned there sure opened my eyes.

1 damn repair on these new vehicles and it could cover your cost for the warranty!!!! if you keep your truck long enough it is worth it.
