I am wondering if anyone has replaced there idler pulley. Do they need to be done often? It sounds like i got a noisey dry puley in front. Thinking its idler pulley. Are they are other pulleys known for going or being noisey?

Replaced ac idler pulley twice in 220k.. the fan mount bearing might be a source of noise too. Check to see if theres a lot of play in the ac pulley

    Oh.
yeah maybe it's time for a timing belt haha. The noise is probably the timing belt tensioner or the fan mount bearing. I'd order the belt kit with the two pulleys

I have replaced a bunch. If you wheel the truck , it's in the perfect spot to get filled with mud/sand and crap. It's also in a great spot to be constantly sprayed by water and road grime. I usually just get a cheap one off Amazon and treat it as a consumable. I did just buy an OEM one because I snapped the adjustment bolt off the pully, and didnt want to pay shipping on a .78 part, so added the pully to the order. Curious to see how long this one lasts.

I recommend you pull the belts off and spin idlers, pulleys, A/C pulley, fan by hand and try to determine where your noise is originating.

If, with the belt pulled away from the AC Idler pulley, you can rock the pulley back and forth any amount at all, it's time for a new bearing.

This is another case where a tiny bit of searching this forum will produce many results. Just search for "AC Idler Pulley".

the noise/vibe so far is only originating whilst on the move, and have not been able to replicate while in neutral idle
not real sure how to diagnose something in this situation where truck needs to be in motion under specific circumstances :notsure:

i have been searching for more than half a year to find another with the exact same gremlin going on, so far the search is Nil

would you drizze FF all over it to keep the winter road grime off of it? i wheel in snow and nasty in the winter, not so much snow this winter, couple of inches tops :(

I dont think FF would stay on there, it would probibly fling right off. I would also be worried it would mess with the belts or cause them to slip. If you have gone this long before it seized up I wouldn't be TOO worried.

If you have had this gremlin for a half a year and you are putting miles on the truck, how bad is your issue?

A pulley/idler bearing prolly would have surfaced during that time.

Has anyone ever changed out their pulleys for lighter aluminum ones from URD or LC engineering? I’m due for a timing belt change in the next 10k or so and considering why I’m in there I might as well.

Still running originals on our '08 4.0 4runner with 185k and bearings are good (no wheeling). I did have to press in a new bearing on the tensioner pulley. It can be done much cheaper than replacing the whole tensioner unit as Toyota would have you do. My alternator bearing is making noise but that's for another day

Fluid Film on the pullies or belts would be very wrong. Do not do this. Your belts will slip and cause other issues.
