You honestly do not see many of those on the roads. I have come to believe that is just another of H.L. Mencken's "imaginary hobgoblins"...

    ----------------------------------------
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.”

Lack of inspections doesn't mean you can run unsafe, just that the responsibility is shifted to you. No middle man.

You can still get pulled over and cited for lights, baldies, exhaust etc.

How does it work with old muscle cars and street rods in Mass.?
Say a '23 T-Bucket new build. I know guys who registered them as a '23 instead of a new build here in Ct.

Here we have only emissions and my Nova is exempt since it's considered an antique.

Pretty sure you just register as an antique as a weekend cruiser car. As long as its not performanced modified you can get it inspected easily at the right place. Atleast thats what my girlfriends dad did with a 73 duster. Neighbor across the street did the same with his rat rod ford classic, which is basically an inch off the ground and made of regular old sheet metal of the old days.

    1. I was told my vehicle failed because my plate was illegible.
By state law, Massachusetts license plates must be readable from 60 feet away. Any green or red passenger plate, which has lost its reflective coating or paint or has been damaged, must be replaced. You can also be cited by law enforcement for this violation. The RMV encourages vehicle owners to swap illegible plates for a set of red plates at no fee. Faded and illegible plates can be swapped at any of the RMV's Full Service Center locations. A red plate that is lost or damaged can also be ordered at any Service Center or by calling the Contact Center at 857-368-8000. The cost of replacing these plates is $10 a plate and will be mailed to the registered owner.

depending which part of the state you live in. It's easier and faster to just go to the DMV and pick up a plate. This is not a new issue of failing plates. I had to do it with my dodge several years ago. Switched from green to red at no charge at a DMV.

That's such a scam. I know it's not coming directly out of our pockets, but it really is through taxes. My wife had old green plates up until two years ago. We swapped them out because you really couldn't read them. She wasn't cited for it, but the cop suggested she get them changed. 6 months after putting the new ones on, they look almost as bad as the green ones did. I don't know who has the contract for the manufacturing of the plates, but it must be a pretty lucrative business.
When I bought my Taco new in 2010, the dealer was supposed to put the inspection sticker on. They refused me due to my plates (red ones) not being reflective enough. I left the dealer and drove to my inspection station and paid for it myself. Not a problem and I still have those plates on today. I've had them since 1985.

The issue is, they are telling people it is 10-12 weeks to get the replacement plate. That is 10-12 weeks with a rejection sticker, which puts you past the 60 days for reinspection. So the other option is to pay the bigger fee to re-register your car and get new plates and not wait for the replacement.

When I went to get my truck inspected the other month, (right before all the camera bullshit) the Firestone in Hadley wouldn't even look at my truck. he said "you cant get that little monster truck inspected here no way!" and I said "sir its within spec, just a 2 inch leveling kit with some beefier tires" He didnt buy that. he told me he wanted nothing to do with getting my truck to pass inspection.

... It did feel nice to hear he thought my little truck was a monster truck lol

long story short, I went right down the road, got a sticker with no problems and then left

It's easier for that guy at Firestone to tell you it won't pass, than for him to actually learn the inspection laws.

Is it the DMV that saying it takes 10-12 weeks? Is this by ordering by computer? not hard to run to a DMV and get a new plate before the 60 days. Any one can pick up the plate as long as they have old plate and paper work in hand. They have plate on hand, so I don't get the wait time , unless it's a specialty plate and being mailed. Here in western ma. Just run up to greenfield DMV the wait time is not that bad.

It's a 10-12 week lead time to get a replacement of your current plate. It has to be ordered.

You can go to the RMV and get new plates, but they said that you have to pay $60 for the new registration.

$10 for the replacement plate, but you have to wait.

K , then it changed since I had to replace my green to red. As new plates where no charge and no new registration fee back then

I had my inspection last week. It's unmodified 2017, but it still only took about 15 minutes. The guys in this shop are absurdly fast. I wouldn't be surprised if they are the reason for this new documentation thing.
