They are the reason. That’s why we have all these cameras. Laws didn’t change. Procedure changed. Now it’s harder to pass vehicles who don’t technically pass. And a lot of people made cash under the table passing cars that shouldn’t

From the way the inspector at my station explained it to me, the RMV does not audit every inspection that comes through. That would be a ridiculously daunting task.
Let's say for example your truck was questionable on a lift height and tires that stick way out. You get a station that passes you and slaps a sticker on. Now lets say you get in an accident and someone is hurt as a result of an unsafe vehicle. The RMV now has more evidence to work with insurance carriers to screw you and not pay on a claim. They will deem you at fault or at least negligent just because of that evidence that they now have. And then on top of that, the inspection station that slapped that sticker on your truck is now also at fault and at the very least lose their ability to do inspections.

Truck was in at 10:54 and out at 11:02 checked my headlights, took pics of the plates, hooked up to the OBD, put a sticker on and on my way I went

I think I am going to need to replace my headlights to pass. They are fogged and have cracks in the lens. They let it go last year, but I'm doubtful this year.

Technically a cracked headlight doesn’t pass and neither does fogged up ones

I'm not really sure why they didn't fail me for them before, they failed me for a cracked tail light last year, and it wasn't fogged at all. :notsure: I want to change them out anyway, I can't see shit.

It's all about making money. I live in Pennsylvania, which like Massachusetts is a Commonwealth. In PA, safety inspections are required every year for all vehicles, except those 25 years old or older that are registered as antique/historic. Emissions testing is required in 25 of 67 counties for gasoline-powered vehicles under a certain GVW (a category that all Tacomas unfortunately fall into). All vehicles 1975 or newer that are not registered as an antiques must get emissions testing. Vehicles 1974 and older that aren't registered as antiques must get a safety inspection, but are totally exempt from emissions testing. In 2020, any Pennsylvania resident who owns a 1995 Tacoma will be able to register it as an antique, and thus will be exempt from emissions testing and safety inspections. The one drawback is that you can only drive the vehicle a certain amount of miles per year. All diesel-powered vehicles, from passenger vehicles like VWs and the new Chevy Cruze diesels, all the way up to huge commercial trucks, are exempt from emissions testing.

All heavy-duty trucks (2500 and 3500 pickups and cargo vans, and all commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds, for example) are exempt from emissions testing regardless of whether they are gasoline or diesel. Unfortunately, gas-powered ¾-ton Suburbans (and Yukon XLs in the case of 2000-newer GMC models), gas-powered Ford Excursions, and gas-powered ¾-ton and 1-ton passenger vans are considered passenger vehicles and thus have to pass an emissions test every year if they are registered in one the 25 counties that require it.

I honestly think that safety inspections are a good idea. New Jersey did away with them in 2010, and now only requires emissions testing every 2 years (Pennsylvania is every two years). Drive over the state line into Jersey, and the difference is night and day. What the difference in the inspection law means is that it can be a rusty deathtrap that's falling apart, but if it isn't producing higher-than-normal emissions, it's legal to be registered and driven on public roads in NJ!

I think it should be the other way around. Vehicles have become so advanced that excessive pollution is all but a thing of the past. My opinion? Abolish the emissions testing and keep safety inspections!

As for the new rules in Massachusetts, a vehicle not passing because of the front license plate being "off-center" is just bullshit! Pennsylvania doesn't require a front license plate, so I don't have to worry about that nonsense...

I read the article that the OP included, and it seems like little more than a way of making money. I hate to use the P-word, but it all comes back to politics...

As for me, I've never had a problem with my Tacoma passing inspection. If some mechanic failed my truck for any of the stuff listed in the article, we'd have a problem...

Price didn’t change here. It’s $35 still. The only thing that’s changed is procedure and time. now it is supposed to take 30 minutes where as it used to take 20. That’s the shops loss, not ours. This isn’t about money, it’s about licensed inspectors passing vehicles that should not pass inspection.
