I've smoked weed once in my life. Didn't hate it, but it didn't do much for me. However, I do believe that weed should just be legalized nationwide!

In Pennsylvania, however, it's easier to obtain a few ounces of weed than it to get a six-pack of beer or a bottle of wine! Hell, it's easier to get heroin in some parts of PA than it is to get alcohol!

I’m from Cali so can someone explain this inspection stuff? I’ve heard my sister say she needs to take her can in for inspections every 3 years ... what do they look at? Or is it just like a smog check ?

I think California is just emissions testing (no safety), and in the Cali it's called smog. I thought it was every two years, at time of registration renewal. What's really obnoxious in Cali is that all vehicles 1976 and newer must be smogged, and there's no such thing as an antique tag. My uncle who lives in Monterey had to register his 1977 VW Westfalia at his brother's house in Texas because it wouldn't pass smog in Cali.

It's every year here, they hook up to the OBDII connection and run a diagnostic, take pics of the front and rear plates. Take pics of the dash to make sure you have no lights on. Tinting, depending on how obvious it is they look at how far the wheels stick out and tread depth.

When I visited family in Monterey last October, I met this guy in Carmel who had a 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali dually. He told me he was paying $900 in taxes and registration fees annually, and blamed the governor of the state.

I would also like to point out that while Pennsylvania state inspection sucks, it's nowhere near as bad as California.

    1. Pennsylvania allows any vehicle 25 years old or older to be registered as an antique, thus exempting it from the emissions testing and safety inspection. The one catch is that you can't drive it more than a certain amount of miles per year.

    2. California does not have safety inspection that I'm aware of, but smog testing is required statewide. Pennsylvania requires safety inspections statewide, but emissions in just 25 of its 67 counties!

    3. Inspections and registration renewal are not interconnected in Pennsylvania like they are on California! My Tacoma's registration expires in August every two years, whereas the inspection is October of every year.

I paid $129 to register my 2010 Tacoma last summer, and it's good through 2019.

I failed because my single green license plate, "wasn't reflective enough." I was like you're f'n kidding me right? Nope just got to the registry and they'll give you new plates.
I'll date myself in saying that I remember when Mass had 2 plates them changed to one as a cost cutting measure. Now, with open road tolling on the Tobin bridge and the pike, they're taking pictures front and back and will send you a bill in the mail in this purty orange envelope.

I was told that next year's inspection Bay will have multiple cameras so that it can be verified that the complete inspection is done.

But with all the work done to my truck I might fail inspection in other states ... smog is easy to get around ... but ya 400 plus for the next few years is what it looks like

I also think that inspections are another way for the government to spy on you. In Pennsylvania, you have to hand over your registration and proof of insurance when you drop the vehicle off. They won't even let you leave it in the glovebox for the mechanic to find later. You have to give it to them before they even touch your vehicle.

This wasn't directly related to inspections, but a friend and coworker of mine bought a 2011 Silverado 1500 4x4 last summer. He decided to change his insurance company to get a better rate. He never let the policy on his truck lapse. He just switched policies. Well, the PennDOT dumbasses over in Harrisburg somehow got the idea that insurance had lapsed and immediately suspended the registration on the Silverado. My coworker had no knowledge of this, until the police pulled him over for seemingly no reason.

My coworker was informed that the registration on his truck was suspended. He showed the cops valid proof that truck was insured, and the cops ended up letting him drive home without so much as a ticket, but they still confiscated his license plate.

My friend appealed to PennDOT but in the meantime he still needed to drive to work. The truck was insured and inspected, and his driver's license was valid, so he just put a plate from another truck he'd had that he recently sold. Amazingly, no cop noticed this.

My friend ended up getting a new plate free of charge when PennDOT realized it fucked up.

Oh damn. How did the inspection go? They guy who told me about it said someone will be watching the inspection remotely and can interact with the inspector.

Yes this is true. If they see something they dont like they could even cancel the inspection pretty sure.
