    Need… no. Is it nice… yes. I have an auto trans with 33s and 4.88s, I like it.

    I regeared to 4.56 with 33s. Pretty happy with it. I feel like most, if they are regearing, do 4.88s

    You can survive on 33’s with an auto and some excess weight off you want to

    don’t regear until you everyone tells you that you need 35’s


    Turns out you don’t have an auto, you’re good

    When I did front and rear lockers I regeared to 4:88's along the way because I got a friend deal on the gear sets. Then because I got 4:88's, I went from a 235/85r16 tire (32") to a 255/85r16 (33") even though I had been very pleased with the 235's. 235's also have much better availability and appear nearly the same as a 255, especially in a mud terrain. Almost every tire manufacturer makes a 235 while only 3 or 4 make a 255.

    In hindsight the 4:88's were unnecessary because my truck's factory gear ratio was 4:30. With 4:30's and 32" tires I was getting nearly the same MPG as stock, so typically 21-23 MPG freeway and 18-19 MPG in town. That was with a lift, mud tires, armor and a camper shell. With 4:88's and 33's I was lucky if I got 17 MPG freeway and 15 MPG in town.

    The 4:88's crawled a little better in low range, but I lost some turning radius because the 33's rubbed the frame rails at full lock. On pavement it felt about the same but I got worse fuel economy. Between the two setups, off-road performance was kind of a draw but on-road every day use was noticeably compromised with 4:88's.

    Im on 4:10s and 33s with a 3.4 auto and it feels fine to me. Light weight wheels help too, check out SCS wheels.

    Just threw in some 4.56s on my manual with 285/75/16. Drove on stock 3.91s for about 8 months and it’s certainly doable, but I’m much happier with the ride now. Feels much easier to accelerate and keep moving now. Getting about 2-3mpgs more now than when I hadn’t regeared.

    Ive been on 33's with a 5spd 3.4 and a 4.10 ratio and I have had no issues. The bigger tires actually enable me to go 75+ without feeling like im being too hard on the engine. I definitely would have regeared if I had an auto or lower gear ratio though.

    What gear ratio does my 01 3.4 auto come with? I’ve never seriously considered regearing but it’s still interesting. I hover around 2200 rpms at about 70mph. I would lose that if I regeared right.
