I don't know if I drive like a grandpa, but I know I don't drive like MY grandpa. I have been on many trips with him. He goes 55 MPH everywhere, in town or on the freeway. That being said, I can still get the EPA advertise MPG. I haven't traded my Tacoma for anything mainly because I have only had cars in the past. I don't always love the way it feels to drive the Tacoma, but for me it drives pretty good and is much more suited to having a small family that likes to do things outdoors. Do I miss the acceleration and fuel economy of my cars, yeah. But I wouldn't trade it for the adventures that my truck has allowed. Only trade in my mind would be for full size when the kids are a little bigger. OP, like others have said, figure out what you need it for. If it can't meet your needs, find something that can, be patient, and utilize the good resale value.

Go with what works for you. Consider the pros/cons, and the usefulness in your life gained. We had a '95 Tacoma, sold it in '09. It didn't fit our life then (or so we thought), got a 2009 Infiniti G37X sport, and completely loved it. Missed the truck, but not as much as I enjoyed the G for me & the wife for long commutes and road trips (hotel stays). Started talking about getting a truck about 3 years ago, and it just seemed to fit our lifestyle again. Got a bigger, new Tacoma in October of 2017, and it fits our lifestyle now. Got a camper trailer about 2 months ago, not towing that with a car. Trips to Lowe's are a lot easier to get what I bought home.

Do I regret either decision? No.

I only keep vehicles for 3 years....So that will have to be future owners, So far it trounces my 2016 Tacoma on many metrics. I'll take another look at Tacoma the next redesign. But it will have to come with at minimum, the power, and torque of the Ranger as well as a much better transmission and rear ends. And a much better implementation of Toyota's old in the tooth Entune system (which is a giant leap of faith) SYNC 3 is the bomb..

I don't want to deal with a "tune" to make the Tacoma viable

Looks are subjective as well as interior designs. Looks don't carry much weight with me regarding a truck. I don't buy a truck to show it off. Interior of the Ranger is light years ahead of Tacoma as well the tech.

Debating on selling the Taco PP and getting an E63 AMG as a weekend car. Anybody go from Taco to AMG or M?

Do it. As long as the MB has a warranty. I've had two C63's and they are monsters, as is the E63.

Looking into W212 chassis so most likely no warranty :(. Reliability is what's holding me back.

After too many fast cars and speeding tickets I learned to opt for the off-road trucks.

Cops still haven’t figured out how to write you up on the trails.

That's a scary proposition. You're an engine failure away from a lawn ornament.

Traded my 17 Tacoma for a 19 Tundra. I have no need for the Tundra but it’s what I want. Get what you want because life is too short to drive something you aren’t happy with. I love my Tundra.

Pretty similar, except ditched a 17 wrx and an 18 crosstrek and then my wifes 4runner which are cool looking but not a great truck/suv. Resale value was awesome tho.
Got the 18 Taco at a great price and am fairly happy. Great utility, great ride with my Pro shock setup and way better power than the 4 runner. No kids anymore, dont need the room.
Money no object tho? Hell yeah, F150 but no damn turbos. Waste of tech for crap mpgs. Give me the old V8.
Good luck OP. Im never satisfied for long, so I feel your pain. This Taco and my E46 M3 make me happy for now. Gotta have a truck and a sports car IMO.

You do realize smog and safety equipment have contributed to less MPGs. Extra weight and extra smog crap have made it harder to get MPGs.

Forgot to address the Auto trans. I get the attempt at mpg from Toyota, but yeah, it will drive you a little nutty if you monitor things like that. My wife would never even notice tho. I use ECT at all times when I drive. She doesnt care at all.

Traded in my gen 2 for a Tundra. No regrets. It was an excellent truck, and trouble free, but it felt like a full size with a V6.

As far as OP question, I have a 1995 VW Cabrio 5 speed for fun. It has 58k & stored in the off-season. Never seen a Vermont winter ! Love the car but my Tacoma is more practical for my lifestyle. Good luck with your decision.

I had an expedition. When I started driving it I loved it's infotainment, primarily because the map showed the taxiways on the local airport and im a sucker for shit like that, but the damn thing would shut down and restart randomly all of the time. As lackluster as entune is, I have yet to see an advantage to sync over entune.

I traded my ‘14 Taco at 3 years and had so much equity I bought a ‘17 5.0. Crisis was real. That lasted 8 months; realized you really can’t do shit without a truck. Also found out how bad depreciation worked on Fords. Ended up in another Taco. Happiness ensued.

I have the 5.0 coyote engine, didn't want turbos (I already have a fast/fun car, I don't need to drive like a jerk all the time)
But at the same time I have thought about VMP supercharging the truck and hitting 11s lol

Its funny you say that. My 15’ srt charger 392 managed about the same if not slightly better mpg and that includes having fun in that car! Maybe chrysler is onto something lol?

I also considered going back to a full size truck. Drove the 18’ 2.7 with the twin hair dryers. Lots of pep but for the price.... nothing to it. Ended up buying a 19’ trailhawk and regretted it only months after. Issues within weeks of ownership and the day I traded it in, the rear door froze open ( would not close ). Dropped it off for my 19’ trd sport and loving it.

Last summer, my employer issued me a Ram truck to use for two months. It was hard getting use to the Tacoma again. Then I remembered that I can fit both mine and my wife's Tacoma in the garage together.
