I feel the same way. I do not want my mom to pay for any mods. I like the idea of the physical therapy center. What exactly did you do there?

Same. Parents bought truck and pay for maintenance (even though I have prepaid maintenance from prev owner) and I pay for gas and everything else I want to do to it. Except dad bought my 33s (pretty sure thats the last set he buys me), I did need new tires for here in Colorado.

I'm 36, and got my first job at age 7. Been working ever since.

That includes working third shift at a truck stop while going to junior high school. Work 11-7, walk three miles to school, go to class, ride the bus home, go to bed....get up at 10, go work.

Yup, my parents just didn't have the money to pay for any of my stuff with gas having been so expensive. I found a job as a lineman at a local small airport. Loved it and made pretty decent money. Got me into the aviation industry too. My advice... do something similar to what you are thinking about doing as a career. Example, my brother wanted to become a crane operator and started out working in high school for an excavation company as manual labor. He learned everything he could ever imagine and no actually operates the equipment on a daily basis. Its all about getting your foot in the door (and making a few pennies while your at it) :)

Edit: Oh and both of us had to quit sports to do it but it was well worth it in the end. Some people would disagree though...

yep, i have worked since i was 12. my parents owned a coop in Iowa, so I did all the crap work that no one wanted to do. As I got older (16) started to drive chemicals to the fields for the HI Boys to spray. Then started driving semi hauling grain. so...ya....thats why I went to college.
I figured that was my dad's reasoning for making me do all that crap.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Was a life guard during the summer after sophmore and junior years. Then I held a series of two to thee week jobs as my senior year was coming to an end: Whataburger, TCBY, some coffeehouse I don't remember the name of. Then started waiting tables during the summer and never looked back until senior year of college. Got hired for a job during the last few weeks of college, started three weeks after that. Worked ever since.

Moral: Mods will always be there, your youth won't.

I was 16 when I got my first job weedeating at the church we attend. It sucked. I made good money for what I did but I knew I couldnt afford a vehicle on what I was making because I was only working 15 hours a week.

So I on another job the next summer so now I was working about 45-50 hours a week between the two jobs. Still no vehicle.

Then after about a month my now current employer offered me a job working 40 hrs a week making more money and I got to quit the other two. A month of working there and I bought my first truck. (Not a taco)

Two years later I drive what I consider to be the best looking truck in town!

I had to quit playing soccer, football and running track my sophmore year because of work. Im not complaining by any means, heck i had to earn the money for the nice things i had then and i still do now. I think it was a great way to start getting myself prepared for the real world without just being thrown out into it. when i was 15 i started baggin groceries at the local supermarket. All went uphill from there though

I would keep doing the sports. Working mornings or weekends on a farm. Keep the social life to a min for now. Just make time for a select group of friends. It is hard to balance but learn to do it now because it only gets harder. Don't give up sports because there are many opportunities there. Like others have said you have your whole life to work and buy toys.

During my high school years I worked at a bowling alley, drive-in theatre, and mowed lawns. My first car was a used '77 Camaro which cost $3200, I paid $1000 and my dad paid the rest.

    Hell yes!!

    Get a JOB!!!!

When I was 15, I delivered newspapers. When I was 17, I got a job at McDonalds. Busted my ass every weekend. Worked up to management and continued to work at other Mcdonalds when I was in college. Worked fulltime in the summers. I worked for McD's for a total of 9 years.

Although McD's might seem like a shitty job (shitty paying), but when I worked there....you busted your ass and learned to WORK HARD. That HARD WORK discipline has carried over into life in general. THat kind of discipline is NEEDED for success in your future!!

I lived at college (out of state) and was able to get a job instantly at another McD's and support myself while I lived in the dorms.

Definitely get a job, im 17 and working to buy a Tacoma. Even working 30+ hours a week and going to school I still have time to have fun. Depending on where you work most places will be willing to work around your schedule.
