Be careful now. Run your ham radio plans by a sunshine state ASE master mechanic. Another fuse box will interfere with the canbus, and another hole in the firewall will increase neutrino emissions in your cab and fry the ECU.

Thanks for doing the leg work on this one. Chalking this up to malfunctioning injector. Might be worth testing to determine which one, and maybe put the code in the 1st post to save some trouble finding it. Hopefully, you're wife's ankle heals up ok, sorry to hear about the uti. That must have been painful! Waiting for the check.. :fingerscrossed:

Well - it is a 3rd Gen so I'm not sure what that's going to accomplish?

Not sure OP would even tell us if it stalled again in traffic with the radio re-installed after the fuss he went trough to prove Todd wrong.

Unfortunately since OP pretty much took it straight from the Toyota dealer to Yota Pros we will never know which one repaired it.

    GTGallop[OP] said:

Well I picked it up from Toyota and then didn't put any miles on it except to get home and then the trek to Yota Pro's. Still under 100 miles since the pick up and no issues. MPG was actually really good. Except for the sitting part, traffic was flowing pretty steady at about 50/55. MPG was at 12 on this fill up (immediately upon leaving Bell Road Toyota and driving home.) then my overall mileage at Yota Pros was like 22MPG. So maybe the MPG is less of an issue than I worried about.

Seems like it was fixed when it left the dealer personally I would have put several hundred miles on it before I took it to another shop JMHO.

    Well we kinda do.
It's buried in there but I'm not about to go dig it out so I can't fault you for not reading it in the 8,000 pages this turned into.

    Short story is:
    • The truck has a history of poor fuel mileage and then failed.
    • Toyota cleared the codes.
    • Fuel economy still lagged.
    • I escalated to Toyota.
    • Toyota blamed the radio.
    • I removed the radio
    • Fuel economy still lagged
    • Truck failed again.
    • Toyota cleared the codes and said a "fuse was loose" but still - the radio was from Slot 23 which was an unused fuse and that shouldn't have been an issue.
    • Fuel economy still lagged.
    • I took it to Yota Pros who put an actual diagnostic piece of equipment on the truck and determined there was a malfunction in the fuel delivery system and then diagnosed it further as a bad fuel injector.
Since then I've put a few hundred miles on it and the fuel economy is in the 20's where it should be. So if Toyota Todd fixed it and Yota Pros was lying just to get some shop time and parts mark up then why did the fuel economy go from 13/15 MPG when it was having issues and Toyota was just finger diddling the fuses to a solid 20 MPG (sometimes 22/24 under the just right perfect conditions) after Fuel Injectors were pulled and replaced?

I have the check in hand, so Toyota (while not admitting fault or liability) has agreed the work was valid and is covering it.

Greg, I’m just saying you will really never no who fixed it because you didn’t put enough miles on it to know for sure if it was Bell Road Toyota or Yota Pros here are your own words “100 miles since the pick up and no issues. MPG was actually really good.” it actually ran with no issues so how can you say it wasn’t fixed. Not saying you didn’t have a little miss fire but that could have been anything going on with an injector caused from the original problem that in a few more miles may have corrected itself.

As far as Toyota’s reimbursement, I’m sure they paid that to just get you off the books.

BTW, i’m just glad it’s fixed so it really doesn’t matter how as long as it is and I know you have been through hell and back so good luck and I sincerely apologize if in any way I may have offended you with my post!

It’s not hard to tell by reading your post that you are one heck of a good person with a great attitude and a lot of patience!

There was no legalese, no waiver, no agreement to not hold them responsible for future issues. No request to return parts. Nothing. Just a lone check in the mail.

I 110% appreciate all of the support and comments along the way - every single one. Working together is how we tackle all of the angles. At this point I believe the situation to be solved and I'm calling this the last update on the topic. I'll toss the parts in a bin in the garage and hang on to them for a year (probably longer - out of sight, out of mind) just in case. I don't really care if Toyota does a de-constructive test on them or not. Just saving for liability purposes.

Misfire counter in live data (available with any half decent scan tool) had cylinder #2 misfire tallying up when Yota Pros test drove it. The misfires on cylinder #2 were no longer present after injectors replacement. That's distinct and traceable confirmatory evidence.

At least it was a fuel injector issue and not an ignition issue, so the catalytic converter hasn't been cooked by unburnt fuel all this time...

OP thank you for sharing this with us from start to conclusion. I hope I would have taken the higher road that you have were I in a similar situation. Well played Sir. Here's to many great miles in your Taco.

Well I'm sure we'd all like to see him suffer somewhere on the spectrum between an uncomfortable verbal warning and other fates that may be in violation of the Hague Conventions (and probably illegal to do with your sister and two goats in 49 states outside of Arkansas). However, I'm pretty sure Toyota is giving our boy Todd a fat bonus check this year because of all the money he saved them on the other cars he pushed out on the streets.
Maybe that check is $20 or $30 lighter this year? I doubt he notices.

It's the law of averages. You win some and you lose some. As long as you are winning in the 90th percentile then no one really cares about the ones ya lost.
I'm not worried about it. I'm whole. I got a truck that runs great with only a few payments left on it. My refrigerator is full and my wife is happy. If I can get the dog to quit dragging her ass on the carpet during dinner, I'd have it made in the shade. Life is good Lads!

    Just posting up an update.
    upload_2025-5-15_15-42-2.jpg
    upload_2025-5-15_15-42-15.jpg

No outstandingly favorable conditions or anything. About 1/3 surface streets and 2/3 interstate through Phoenix. Mostly level with very little elevation drop.
Now not every tank is a 24/25 MPG tank. And I've been running the AC more and letting the truck idle with the wife in the cab so it's averaging out to closer to 21 MPG.
My distance to Empty is running around 380mi at fill up. This is a far cry better than the 13 / 15 (occasionally 17 if I was really lucky) MPG I was getting before.

Thinking about running a few premium tanks to see if it's that much better.

And yeah - AZ gets dusty.

Great heads up GT, thanks for posting it!

Anyone know a decent diagnostic scanner to try that shows things like cylinder misfires? Want to try one out on my 2017.
