I have a 97 Tacoma 2.7L. After driving for a few hrs it starts sputtering the temp gauge goes too hot (it’s not running hot) and it dies. Right after it will spin over but not crank. Then after a few mins it will start again. I have checked relays fuses changed temp sensor. It has fuel psi. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forum!

    Any codes tripped?

A few hours? High speed interstate? Local stop and go city driving ?

A few minutes 2 or 5 or 10 or more?

    Check your ecm ground.

EFI relay Circuit Opening relay How did you check your relays? They were checked when the truck would not start?

Fuel pump? The pressure was checked while cranking at the time of a no start condition?

    Heat related electrical issue.

    Best of Luck!

Only code shown are 02 sensors bc cat has been cut out.

driving around in hunting club checking traps. Drive for 5 min cut truck off for 10min drive to next trap location and so on.

I swapped efi relay with taillight relay. Taillights work after swapping.

I loosened fuel line on fuel filter and turned key over to crank. Fuel sprayed. Also when truck won’t crank you can’t hear pump when turning key on. But pump comes on for about 2 seconds after shutting key back off.

When temp gauge is showing hot the engine is not overheating.

Like he said....something electrical and hot.....

I would search everything from coils back to battery.....
grounds and battery are easiest to test.....

In the middle of all that is an ignition switch.....thats a problem spot....
    nothin lasts forever.....even aisin...

#1 and #3 It is a igniter circuit problem

It can be anything in the circuit not just the coil/igniter .

I have changed both coils, went ahead and changed plugs and wires, EFI relay and Put a new fuel pump on. It is still doing the same thing. At an idle it misfires about every 3 minutes for about 5 seconds. When misfiring the temp sensor pegs out. When going down the rd after about 5 miles it misfires loses power and dies with temp sensor pegged on hot. What else is on the circuit?

in doing all this I realized the thermostat was not opening. Top radiator hose warm lower hose cold. Changed thermostat and still not circulating. ???

How often do we tell people just use a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner!!:frusty:

OP that still does not explain the temperature gauge problem or the fact none of the MAF sensors codes did not trip as well.

I just hope the OP does not get stuck in the worse possible location.:fingerscrossed:
