This is another step in the right direction. I have nearly zero interest in getting a full size truck, but hopefully the success of the F150 diesel will provide another example to Toyota that they're making a huge mistake by not offer a diesel option for the Tacoma. Just maybe one day I can finally buy my unicorn. A mid size truck or SUV 4x4 with a small diesel engine connected to a manual transmission. To all those haters, no it doesn't need to be brown.... white, MGM or cement grey would do.

Although not manual, you can go buy a diesel Colorado/Canyon today....

    Why?

    Ecoboost 3.5L:

    Power: 365 hp @ 5000 rpm
    Torque: 420 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm

    For me:
    Diesel+Auto = Gas+Manual
    Toyota Tacoma > GM Twins

I actually looked at the GM/Chevy twins when I bought my 2015, I wasn't that impressed.

Basically I want a Mid size Toyota 4x4 with a diesel, hopefully a manual or a Wrangler 4x4, diesel with a Manual.

A possible diesel from "Jaguar/LandRover". Two of the brands with some of the worst frequency of repair rankings in Consumer Reports.
Of course, that might have nothing to do with the engines, but...

I drove a Diesel Hilux for one year 1996-97 in Yugoslavia is was a DCSB 5 speed the exceleration was underwhelming at best. Above 60mph on the highway was a chore.

Because the 3.5 ecoboost produces combined fuel economy in the mid-teens. The diesel will produce fuel economy in the mid-20s.

Fuel economy improvements is the #1 factor driving pickup truck sales today. Ford wisely wants to cash in on that.

If the diesel is successful, Ford may drop the 3.5 Ecoboost and consolidate to just the 2.7 ecoboost.

I'm feeling some doubt regarding that. Sink millions into new R & D versus trying to better tweak and engine that you already sunk millions of R & D into already. I can't see Ford doing that but who knows.

Ford helped (or led) the development for the Jaguar/LR 3.0 diesel back when they owned them, so the R&D has already been done and paid for. I think that's why most people assume this makes sense. If it gets 30+ MPG with the ability to tow almost or as much as the 3.5, it might sway some buyers.
