DPF will still be there. They are axing the EGR.

The truck will no longer be forced to breathe it's own farts.

We owned a baby max. The engine isn't selling because it's a dog.

If someone put a decent diesel in a small truck - simple, efficient, decent power, mechanical simplicity, with the next gen of simplified emissions geared to running around town - there would be a market for it....whether it be a tundra or a tacoma.

The 2006-23007.5 LBZ Dmaxes and 2003-2007.5 5.9 Cummins are increasing in value because they check those boxes. They were the last of the efficient, powerful and flexible diesels without the garbage emissions systems tacked on them.

You have to go back to the 7.3 powerstrokes to find a Ford holding these values. FoMoCo was about 4 years ahead of the curve (eye roll) introducing the 6.0 powerstroke and it's self defeating emissions bullshit. Almost everything wrong with that motor centered on the EGR system.

I was reallly debating the Cummins R2.8 for my 85 pickup but after further reading that it’s been around for a few years and they have had issues with it overseas I was hesitant but once I found out that one was made in China I was out. Nissan makes good Diesels but of course none are in the states like Toyota’s except for the HINO.

Not sure. I think the HD Rams are all new in 2020?

The next Gen Cummins B (6.7) is touting what they call "Single Module" emissions.

It combines the DPF, SCR and urea-dosing systems in one module, providing an up to 50 percent reduction in size and a 30 percent reduction in weight compared to the current setup.

They claim that this system is capable of removing emissions almost entirely by passive regeneration.

Give it a couple of years to work the bugs out.

    Yeah, no diesel in 2019.

    The rumors keep flying though....maybe 2020...or 2021....or 2022.

If and when it happens, you will hear about it first on TW.

With the projected price increase of ULSD in 2020, I find it hard to believe any automaker would invest in light duty diesel vehicles

These midsize/half ton/light duty diesels will not hang around long. They are very cost prohibitive due to all the emissions equipment needed.

Electrification is where it’s at. Fiat Chrysler is already there with the Ram and Jeep. I imagine Toyota already has a thing or two in the works.

I know everyone only wants a simple truck, but I believe those days are short lived. I am personally excited. Being an Electrician/Controls Tech, I can really geek out on these Hybrid Systems.

People are full of shit. Simple trucks used to be on the market, then they weren’t. There is a reason they haven’t returned - nobody wants them.

The guys that genuinely do but refuse to buy that older truck to rehab and fix up are living testament that shit talks and money walks, in that situation.

Lot of guys yell about it until it’s time to spend money.

There are plenty of truly simple trucks available, and few of them have diesels.

Diesel today on a sub 3/4 ton truck is more trend driven than anything else. Economy and simplicity are non-existent. For work trucks, diesel can’t be beat. For wannabe work trucks, hybrid is the cats ass.

    This!

Premium on the diesel option would drive many away and Toyota knows it, or they would have already done it. Add to that the TDI fiasco, I just don’t see them taking a chance.
How many diesel Colorado/Canyon’s do you see on the road? I’ve seen one.

People want modern safety features and super basic modern features like digital display. You can want a simple basic truck and not be in the market for anything older.

I'm a case study then...had a simple truck, a 2003 Tundra SR5 V8 4.7L 8foot bed 4H/4LO that is it, unless you include my tape deck and ashtray NO electronic nannies. I put around $10K into it over the years, and it got to the point where I was going to dump another $7-8K into it to stay on the road this year... I bought a new Tacoma instead this July.

Haven't you heard? Diesel is the new dinosaur. I think diesel sales in the EU are down like 30% year over year? Diesel in the U.S. as a commuter was driven by the europeans.... nobody wanted them here, but 'it's what the europeans are doing so it must be right, right?'. I think diesel as a power plant in a true work/towing rig, sure... it makes sense. But for a commuter these days gas and hybrid get darn near the same gas mileage, are cheaper to maintain, are cleaner, cost less, and of course are gas station friendly.

Politics is getting involved, and France and others intend to ban the sales of gas and diesel vehicles by 2040 (yeah, a lot can happen). And in their great wisdom, they tax what.... cruise ships. Rather than the shipping tankers responsible for the bulk of ocean based exhaust, they tax luxury items. No matter, in the end you and I pay the tax. Sometimes action truly is worse than inaction though.
