The EPA and CARB require extensive emissions equipment on diesels, which will increase the selling price of the truck by at least $4000. Urea injection system , particle filter for example. There will be very few takers.

The regulators in the US have ruined personal-vehicle diesel technology for both Canada and the US. It seems to be quite deliberate, around protecting US companies.

I expect if there is a diesel it goes in the Tundra because that's Toyota's "real" truck, and it adds 800lbs and $7k to the sticker and the bros go nuts over it. Every back window on every Dodge will have to be updated with a new sticker of Calvin pee'ing on a Toyota. It will be pandemonium.

I don't get the hype for a diesel. I wouldn't want one even if it was an option. Maybe 10 years ago but not now. If I really needed the towing ability of a diesel I wouldn't have bought a Tacoma and too many strings attached to the better mpg for me.

    :(

But I wanted to run a uuuuber cool exhaust tip to go with some 14" wide rims and low-pro mud terrains.

Someone must have stolen his massive 12" drop hitch and truck nutz. No way he left home without them.

If I wanted a diesel, I would have bought a REAL TRUCK. Full Size with a V8 or at least I6 Diesel.

Sorry, I just don't see the attraction to add a diesel to a Taco unless the entire drivetrain, frame, brakes, etc are all upgraded to allow me to haul 2x-3x the weight.

Didn’t the eco diesel flop? I know the emission scandal didn’t help.

Amen there man, I have a base Access Cab 2015 4-cyl 5-spd 4x4 Taco and the wife has a 2003 CRV, both are great vehicles in their own right.

I picked up a smoking deal and got a 2000 Land Cruiser and after driving it, I would love to score a low mileage stock 4runner with the 4.7.

I dont think it did, I can't find one on any lot. I drove one and was pretty impressed. Everyone that I know that has one loves it. I think it's a world engine and they have made millions of them.

The longevity of the Rams have me a little concerned even though I've owned them my entire life and have been pretty happy.

If they could get the Tundra to at least 18mpg hwy I'd be sold. I talked to a guy that has a 2017 Tundra on 305's and he gets 11mpg no matter what he's doing.

I'm in the market for a 1/2 ton to replace all my trucks, and I'm just not seeing one that stands out right now. I even looked at the new Titan which I actually liked.

This thread title seems misleading at best...

After reading iH8Mud, it seems there’s no implication that the diesel would be offered in a truck...but then I have to wonder what other (non truck) diesels are successful in the US market?

2019 is also more than likely when the 4Runner is due for refresh. My money is Toyota punts on a ground up design and brings in the Prado or Fortuner with a diesel option. They give it a few years to soak and see how the market reacts before maybe offering it in a Taco for the 3rd gen’s refresh.

Or...they just come in guns blazing and drop it in a 3rd gen Taco. But Toyota has literally never done anything guns blazing.

He was banned for eternity. Don't forget the rear disk brake arguments took lives too.

With the cost per gallon difference of diesel in the USA, I can't see it making sense in the Tacoma. First is the sales upcharge for the motor. Then there's the fuel cost upcharge. Considering my driving habits and current mileage...

...the thing would have to get 35 MPG to break even over 11 years. Not worth going to diesel.

On the flip side, my wife's Prius is a dragster for 10 feet. Throws you back in your seat (until the gas motor kicks in). I'd love to see what kind of low end torque we could get out of a hybrid Taco.
