This is an amazing conversation. I have decided to start taking hallucinogenics before opening up TW on Fridays so the conversations will make sense.

Use caution... I have used LiquiMoly Engine flush but this is a band aid. The concern I have is that will this clean too well? There is no easy way that I can see if the crap that doesn't drain out is blocking the pickup screen. I had one of my charity cars make it the 1000 miles to Cabo San Lucas, 2 days of 12 hour driving, with zero problems... it didnt last 100 miles after that. The mechanic pulled the pan and sure enough, the pickup screen was blocked. I guess the long drive loosened all the crap and it found its way to the screen.

yeah, I've seen this backfire on severely sludged engines...

all that sludge gets freed! Yay! now it's in the pan clogging the oil pickup. Engine died of oiling issues. Whoops

Pennzoil Yellow Bottle regular or Mobil 1 full synth are the most detergent oils I know of I use them for cleaning nasty engines and it works, takes time but it works safely.

Hell yeah, 44k is good stuff and Moa too. Use those regularly really seems to help as the miles add up

Ditto on the modern oil has detergents in it, as does fuel. Regular maintenance should be all that's required. I did my valve cover gaskets at well over 100K miles more like 130-150k and the valve train was spotless. Normal wear on the cylinders ring's and valves will never be remedied by cleaning or "leaving gunk" in there to fill the gaps.

If you feel the need to clean off a bit of carbon from the valve's and the piston tops, that will help with detonation by eliminating potential hot spots from carbon heating up. A bit of carbon is normal as engines age for lots of reasons.

Are you solving a known problem? Or just throwing money at a perceived one?

if you know you have buildup run a good synthetic with higher detergent levels. If you need a more aggressive cleaner I like Auto RX

if you have an unknown then run mobile one or penzoil platinum

This video shows a Prius engine breakdown at 300K miles.
The mechanic is great at quickly explaining each component and the normal wear expected.

At about 7:49 he digs into the oil pan....

99.9% of this advice is crank case.

You mean I shouldn't fill my crank case with Seafoam, ATF, or diesel just because someone on the internet told me it would make my engine run better?

You should, others probably shouldn't though.

I did when I was in high school and it worked great. A ton of sludge came out after adding Seafoam to the oil a few miles before an oil change. I put in fresh oil, a new filter and was on my way again.

Engine only made it a couple weeks before all the redistributed sludge caused oiling issues and the driver's side head seized up. Timing belt sheared the crank key off and all

That's about the expected result. I truly haven't found anything seafoam is genuinely good for. It does nothing added to fuel, it's bad for oil shear strength and viscosity, pouring it down the intake makes a fun smoke show for morons but it just ruins the catalyst and wideband/O2 sensors....

So if you have a dirty old engine then save up for a rebuild while driving it and maintaining it while also running good oil to clean it along the way?

Seafoam is basically light premix anyway, imagine it would be pretty good in a 2stroke outboard. Thankfully I stopped fucking around with marine shit, snake oil may eat a lot of money from the uneducated, but I think boats eat more haha

Could be worse. It could be Lucas oil additive…

Mmmm it's like gear oil without the anti wear, tastes especially good in tea. I keep a bottle around for engine assembly, it's good for that, kinda it tho.
