The US has the most stringent diesel emission laws in the world, no one wants to try and sell them here.

Toyota has said more than once, in official venues, that they will never release a diesel in the US.

Now, we do know that they are going to a single platform for Hilux, Tundra, Tacoma - maybe 4Runner too, but I predict a hybrid turbo gasoline. The Hybrids already use an Atkinson cycle motor because the electric helps fill in the lack of torque with that engine configuration, so it seems kinda' inevitable. Pair that with a 10speed auto like everyone else is using and you have a pretty decently competitive truck.

Even Nissan has dropped the MT in the Frontier, making the Tacoma the last MT pickup available in the US. So I'm pretty sure the Gen 3 will be the last of the MT's.

It's 20 years too late for a diesel pickup. Even guys running heavy duty trucks are dumping diesel due to high costs of everything involved. All of our new school buses and ambulances locally are now using gas engines.

I have a BIL still driving a 1999 F250 diesel with almost 400,000 miles. When he bought the truck it made sense. The cost of the truck wasn't much more than a gas engine. Today a diesel F250 is $10,000 more than a gas engine. In 1999 diesel fuel was 1/2 the cost of gas, today it is as much as $1/gal more than gas. Throw in higher maintenance costs, DEF, and extremely complex engines that cost a fortune to work on and people are moving to gas. Gas engines are lasting longer too. Getting 300,000-400,000 out of a gas engine isn't that hard anymore.

The gladiator offers MT still, also the new Bronco will have a 7spd.

Right. I totally forgot about those. I think the default for the Gladiator is MT now that I think about it. :) I'm all for the electric revolution, but I'm going to miss the MT.

Pretend you’re in the market for a diesel and go test drive one for a week. Then come back here and tell us how fun it was

so true... just spent 7K on diesel emissions equipment on a F250 at work, will not recommend a diesel when we replace this unit.

    Yeah, never going to happen.

Diesel only really makes sense for heavy towing and hauling. Those Cummins are sweet, though. Ma's boyfriend has 3. One is newer, 400K miles on an '03 and 800K on a '97. They definitely last!

Diesel has been available in the Hilux all over for years... It is unlikely to make it to the USA however. Diesels are being cut out of most vehicle lines around the world due to emissions. They'll be around for commercial purposes, certainly...
I drive a diesel now and it is a great performer very very torquey (Especially for its size!), great on fuel, and utterly indestructible. It is a 2.0 L - But I imagine it pollutes a bit more than a gasoline engine...

I will miss MT as well. I get no joy out of an AT, let alone a cvt or an electric. All my vehicles were MTs and black. I had one 2003 silver accord AT, on which i got a good deal from a friend. I hated that car with a passion. I sold it as soon as i could.

Its very cool Bronco will offer 7spd, i hope other manufacturers take notice and maybe we can have MT renaissance:rolleyes: It should be the cool new thing, like wearing skinny jeans with those long 70s style shoes.

My buddy just installed a cummins in his 84 K20 and its a beast. Its the 12 valve with mechanical fuel pump. He converted AT to MT as well. He owns a machine shop so he is amazing at stuff like that, he helped me out greatly one time when i cross threaded my plug in my ranger.
