Long time waiting almost 8 months but the truck is done with the D4D diesel 5 speed auto. Runs great, I returned from San Antonio TX to Philly PA running 80 on highway with 1/2 ton load, engine in back of truck on pallet, running ac I averaged 24mpg purring along at 2,000 rpm. Driving around here empty load really easy best fuel mileage I averaged is 29mpg with stock factory chip in truck. May chip it for better economy. Let me know when the next taco meet is in the Philly area I will stop by so club members can check out the truck. Will get some photos uploaded.

I am jealous. I will probably make the jump to a canyon or Colorado when they come out with their diesel. Unless Toyota is going to bring one to North America in the tacoma/hilux by 2016.......

i don’t think it will be in the taco by 2016. thats just when the tundra is getting one.(imho it makes more since to do it in the tundra 1st, much bigger trucks getting about same MPG as the 4.0 taco, also it’s already set up to tow and haul a lot more than the taco) I’d say probably by 2018 the taco will have a diesel. probably not the D4D but maybe. it maybe a small cummins since they already have a deal with them and for the tundra.

I see the Canyon LTZ S-10 in brazil all the time it has a 2.8 liter intercooler turbo diesel nice truck, only issue is any diesel trucks built after 2012 will have DPF scrubbers, elaborate EGR system and worst of all UREA system which injects UREA into the exhaust to scrub the exhaust, the UREA tank require fill up also, additional cost and all the emission crap kills the level of efficiency of the diesel and worst of all reliability.

MY 2012 Powerstroke Ranger was built in 2011 last year for the good powerstroke as 2012+ have a duratorque 3.2 with all the crap, my powerstroke makes same power as the new one but get 5mpg better. Same with the D4D I have in my Taco is a 2010 pre emission crap, still a clean running diesel compared to the american cummings / powerstroke but without all the scrubber egr crap.

That is why it is better to do a swap with a pre 2012 diesel powerplant, The diesel taco with the D4D is nice but much better would be the 3.0 liter powerstroke ford in an F-150. Buying a 2014 - 2016 dodge ram diesel or Chevy Canyon do your research on the all the emission crap prior to purchase as you dont want to be disappointing after you buy.

Well after driving both the Toy taco diesel and the Ranger I would say the Ranger is a much nicer truck, handles / drives better, better quality build truck, and a much better diesel engine with more power and 3- 5 miles per gallon better economy. A better swap would be the Ranger powerstroke in a Ford F-150. I am heading back to brazil in Aug for 6+ months, am going to look at buying wrecked rangers at auction, pulling the powertrains with complete injection, wiring etc and importing the Powerstroke powertrains to USA.

    E-mail me directly at rradjusting@comcast.net

    For updates on the idea.

I love that the OP actually came through with his ideas and showed actual pics of his swap. Didn't post pics of a V8 in a runner if I'm not mistaking claiming it was a taco. +1 to you OP and sweet conversion!
