I was under the impression the Diesel Toys conversion is a near OEM quality conversion? Not two dudes running an off-road shop with a sawzall and a torch in their backyard.

I wouldn't pay $30k for their conversion but for somebody wanting somebody else to do a quality conversion seemed like the way to go.

Yep. Not sure if there’s any upsides to a mid size truck with a diesel engine. I can’t hot shot with it, so it’s a waste of money.

This is like that commercial space that's always for lease. I don't think anyone wants this thing, not at that price

Automotive chip shortage may abate in the coming weeks as producers like TSMC are finally retooling their lines for those back orders. It'll be a few months before it's noticeable in new car dealer lots/sticker prices, maybe another year max for used car prices to return to equilibrium. But the end is at least within sight.

It's interesting, but always so much more when the original owner does a conversion, or even a lot of modifications and then sales it.

I have Jeep TJ and there is a Cummins diesel conversion and that I've been told is about $25k to do. I personally would not do that unless I really wanted to travel a long way between gas stations (my current mpg is 12, which I think about doubles with the diesel?), along with having money to burn!

I grew-up around Hot Rod’s and saw the same thing; buy a car, build it, sell it.

My guess is the car or truck doesn’t turn out the way they intended, or they ran out of money, or space or they get bored with finished cars.

I’m 3/4 of the way through a Subaru swap on (what used to be) an air-cooled VW. I have no plans to sell it at this point but there have been times when I’ve looked at it and thought about selling it and moving on to something else.

Ten years ago I built another air-cooled VW and sold it a couple of years after it was finished; the car was fine but wasn’t what I thought it was going to be (the interior was way too small for two adults). In that case it made more sense to sell it and put the money into a 4x4 I was driving at the time.

In NJ you couldn't even get this inspected without a ton of paperwork and would probably impound it.

Same guys that want a car motor (LS) swap. :D

Complaints are there about the 3.5l just like there were about the old 3.4l. 4.0l folks complain also. If we got a 4.7l or 2JZ, I can promise you that there would be complaints. FFS, when the oil filter is a Top Five complaint, there is no winning.

    The diesel dreamers would complain this D-4D isn't a 1,000lb 4BT one-wire Cummins.

In the end, the Toyota gas V6 get the job done.

Can't imagine what California would do. Probably order it to be demolished.

This "it has to be Diesel" mindset reminds me of the old bragging rights.. ..."I've gotta 4-Bolt Main!"

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. One of my cars has a ‘Smog Exemption Certificate’. The state releases ~150 a year (it’s part of a ‘Special Construction’). Title. It’s not easy to do but I personally know it’s possible, though it’s not something I’d want to do again.

Another way is to prove what vehicle that engine came-out of and as long as it’s the same year (or newer) than the vehicle it’s going-in and passes inspection it should be fine. I’m thinking about swapping in a new engine in my T100 and this is the route I’ll likely go if I do it.

Or make a friend in Arizona and register it there LOL!
