DIESEL Tundra Prototype in Texas!!!

Educate me folks. What is so good about the diesels. I know diesel used to be cheaper than gas, but that is no longer the case. Enlighten me, please.

 

Tons more torque with better fuel economy.
Also the ability to run alternatve fuels such as Bio-Diesel

 

less maintenance, longer engine duration

Checkout the difference in fuel economy on a 2005 Jetta (per MSN Autos):

1.9L 100 hp I4 (TDI - Diesel)
5-Speed Automatic Overdrive 32 / 43 mpg
5-Speed Manual Overdrive 38 / 46 mpg

2.0L 115 hp I4 (Gasoline)
4-Speed Automatic Overdrive 24 / 30 mpg
5-Speed Manual Overdrive 24 / 31 mpg

Now look at the difference in torque:

1.9L 100 hp I4 (TDI - Diesel) - 177 lb-ft @ 1800 RPM
2.0L 115 hp I4 (Gasoline) - 122 lb-ft @ 2600 RPM

These numbers are just on a 1.9L and 2.0L. Now imagine a 2.5L or a 3.0L.


Diesel engines are built to a higher quality standard. Since they have higher compression ratios (compare a 19:1 ratio in a 3.0L D4D to 10:1 ratio in a 4.0L V6) diesel engines have to withstand more force on all components. Even the fuel rails are a higher quality as they carry fuel at pressures up to 3000 PSI. On top of that, diesels have fewer electronics on the engine block itself. This is because the diesel fuel is not ignited by a spark, but rather is compressed until it explodes. For this reason - older diesel engines could be run without electric power at all (most newer ones have a fuel cut-off if DC-Voltage is cut).

Diesels can be run on several different kinds of fuels.
Although most new diesels have low tolerances for forgein particulate matter in the fuel (dirt, grime, sludge, water, etc.), the original diesel engine ran on Peanut Oil. The idea behind the diesel engine (per Rudolf Diesel, inventor) was that farmers could grow the fuel used for their machinery. Many farmers in today's Mid-West do just that! They use the oils from the vegetable they grow to power the machinery they use to harvest the vegetables. In the early 1900's it was found that petroleum based diesel could be made from crude oil that could not be refined into gasoline - hence the petroleum based diesel we are all acustomed too. Some diesel engines can even be run on Kerosene.

Bio-Diesel:
Bio-Diesel is much better for the environment, and it is used widely in Europe, Asia, and Australia to help cut emissions. Unfortunately our government has not regulated bio-diesel very well. Most Bio-Diesel is a good quality here in the states, but I have heard of people getting a poor quality fuel (mostly truckers). This is why VW does no condone using Bio-Diesel. Dodge/Chrysler/Mercedes/Jeep does condone using bio-diesel. All of their new diesel vehicles are shipped with B5 diesel in them (5% biodiesel and 95% petro-diesel).

Side-note: my 1998 Jetta TDI was run on B100 (100% bio-diesel) made from rapeseed oil for most of the time that I had it.

I have owned several diesel engines, and I regret selling every one of them (either had to get a larger/safer vehicle or made tons of money selling them). My next purchase will be a diesel. If Toyota steps up to the plate, it will be a Toyota! Otherwise, I might go back to a Volkswagen - Check this out (due in 2008 as a TDI-CR)...

 

This is also true. For some one like me 25,000 mile minimum per year - a diesel is a no brainer (unless it is a Ford Powerstroke )

On a side note I will be purchasing an 85 BJ70 Land Cruiser in the next week or so. 25-30 mpg
This will be my diesel vehicle until Toyota brings out a Hi-Lux Diesel.

Still keeping our 4x4 Tacoma but selling the FJ Cruiser

 

Great info 007. I appreciate the time it took you go do that. The only problem i have with a diesel tacoma is that i will want one immediately. I try to stay away from the first couple years of a new production run as that is the time that they are working out bugs they didnt catch during testing (just look at the new tundra). secondly, i got my truck to last me forever, the idea of paying it off the same time toyota introduces a diesel makes me sick. I would go from no payments to payments on a new diesel. plus, i'm only interested if they develop a diesel 6 cylinder. the 4 is impressive but i have never driven anything less than a 6cylinder and i dont think i ever will.

 

How much is that BJ70 costing you, and where are you getting it? Most of the ones that I find are from Canada and cannot be imported (without selling a limb), or are from overseas (Right Hand Drive ).

I would love to get one, but my wife won't let me get an older vehicle until we have money to spare. No danger of that happening anytime soon.

 

I think you would be very impressed if you drove a 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel. You can get the same power out of it as a V6.

Don't believe me? Test drive a 05-06' Jeep Liberty CRD. I had one. It is an impressive engine. Unfortunately it is mated to a DCX automatic tranny. GRRR

A good note for you - most of the US feels the same way. If the Tacoma does get a V6 turbodiesel, it will probably be a 3.4L or 3.5L V6 TD. Something similar to the Renault engine that is coming in the Altima in 2010.

A friend has owned it for a few years and has dropped a lot of money into it. He later found an HJ60 which he built up so decided to get rid of the 70.

Your wife sounds like my wife and says I have to sell the FJ Cruiser once I pick up the BJ70. Kind of bummed but I have wanted a diesel for years.

I am lucky in that my friend knows a lot about Toyota diesels and has a space to work on them.

I plan on running it on B100 like he currently does. Don't get me wrong these are sloooow vehicles but we have the Tacoma for longer road trips.

Price isn't too bad but definetley high for a vehicle that is 22 years old.

Probably keep it for 2-3 years and then hopefully the Diesel Toyotas will start to arrive on our shores.
