Those Isuzu?...those things would not die. Great drivetrain. Nothing wrong with them. Too bad they disappeared from our market.

i want a diesel but i want to jump it so it needs to be light and it needs to turn high rpm for a big hp number, and twin turbo for roll-on burnouts, and it needs to get 40mpg with the wheels spinning and it needs to be quiet, and not stink like a tractor.

im asking for an impossible pos

i admire it as a power-source, but wouldn't it be expensive to put train tracks on all the roads?

Im by no means Well educated on Diesels at all but i was told " by a friend who recently swapped the d4d into his tacoma that the main issue is the high sulphur or other impurities in the diesel(if i can recall correctly) that cause the High pressure injectors to have some issues. These injectors are said to cost like 800-1200$ per i believe. He had to have a diesel, so he swapped over to mechanical injectors and converted all the rest over and bam, Guys trucks bad ass. Still has a few things to get sorted but his trucks nice

North America, Europe, and the UK have ultra low sulfur diesel. Ultra low sulfur diesel has about the lowest sulfur content you can get in diesel fuel internationally. I'm not sure what problems your buddy is having but I doubt it was because of the Sulfur issues if he's driving a Tacoma in North America, unless he is running his truck in the middle of butt hump no where in Africa that doesn't make sense.

The main problem with diesel engines not built for North America running here is that they don't pass emissions. By the time they do pass emissions, they aren't all that efficient dollar for dollar. Especially right now when diesel isn't falling in price nearly as fast as gas. Maybe with more technology it'll change but I'm taking my name off the diesel wait list for now. Unless the new Tacoma gets >30% better mileage with the same drivability with a diesel engine I won't be interested.

Bad ass car right there. It was bad ass as a diesel but with the electric motor even better. It destroyed all the gas powered cars in the races it entered

True... GM owns part of Isuzu.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isuzu_D-Max
The Isuzu D-Max is a pickup truck built by automaker Isuzu since 2002. It shares the same platform with several General Motors (GM) mid-size trucks in the United States such as the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Isuzu i-Series.

I remember back when we did have diseles in some of the Toyotas, since they were so scarce no one wanted to work on them , kinda like Supra. Toyota motto," jack of all trades master of none "

I feel like a lot of the 6.0's problems were from people hot Rodding them out, leave em' stock and they're fine, our 6.0 excursion is still running strong

I know there is a certain segment of the population that thinks diesels are the way to go and for those folks I hope you find what you're looking for.

For me the idea of a diesel small truck is silly. Having experience with a GL350 Bluetec benz for a couple of yrs (Mother in laws car) I can honestly say I'm glad it wasn't my truck. The cost it adds to the price of the car is unreasonable, The cost of diesel fuel is currently about $1.50 higher than gas and the racket and stink they produce is unnecessary. To add insult to injury the real world mileage isn't any better than the gas models.

I personally think a diesel option in the US market would be a hugh mistake on Toyotas part .

Today's diesels are very quiet. I would say right there with the rather loud 4.0 engine in our trucks.

They also make little to no smell due to def.

Diesels are wayyy closer to the advertised MPG then gas engines. The 13mpg my Tacoma has been getting is completely turning me off of gas engines. Diesels have ample power and get nearly double my Tacomas mpg in a similarly sized vehicle.

    Vantage,

I hear ya and my only experience with modern diesels outside of work trucks is the bluetec motor in the mother in laws GL350. That truck is a 2012 I believe and it's still a noisy smelly mess. As for mileage she's getting right at 18-19mpg which isn't much better than my Tacoma's 16-17mpg so for me the additional noise and additional cost wouldn't be worth it.

Ouch...those are lousy numbers for the MB.... I get anywhere from 20-28 mpg on my X5... And it is one fat pig... The engine is not loud, but there is no mistaking it for a gas engine. You can still hear the characteristic Diesel engine noise/clatter.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
May be true for a 6.0 but a 7.3 is bulletproof. I have a 97 PSD with only 181k on the 7.3 currently, lots more to go! Buddy of mine has a 1990 F350 with the old 7.3 idi (pre powerstroke, no turbo) with 823k on the odometer last time I looked and he still drives it every day to work.

My 97 when I got my Tacoma and brought it home! It ain't pretty (hate red) but it's a tough, reliable workhorse that can tow anything I hook to it with ease. She's parked most the time, but when I need her, she's always there ready to work and earn her keep!
