That's a bit high, all you need is an EGR delete ($200-300), EGT probe and edge CTS ($500), and headstuds ($550).

That's not including labor, but it shouldn't be 6K+ in labor.

Awesome! Yeah they run forever if you take care of them. I love how easy they are to work on, lift the hood on a 6.4 or new 6.7 Powerstroke and it's as technical as a space shuttle under there. My 7.3 may not be fast or flashy, cushy, or comfortable as those new diesels, but I know I can hop in it, fire it up anytime I want and take it anywhere I need without a worry in the world.

And furthermore, International builds great diesel engines. The problem with the 6.0 was that IH and Ford were under great pressure by the EPA to come up with a greener engine so the 6.0 was rushed through production and not a lot of testing was done on it where engines like the 7.3 came from a time when there was little regulation for emissions on diesels and they had several years of development and testing put into them to make them exceptional.

As the owner of two Audi diesels, I can say first hand I like 'em and I'd buy a Tacoma with a diesel - if - it were a modern efficient diesel.

The Audi Q5 - which is not in the price range of the Tacoma I realize, is DAMN fast. No 3.0L gas engine can get 37MPG on the highway in a 4000 pound SUV, with 425 foot pounds of torque. Diesels offer better fuel efficiency, longevity, and power. They're quiet, smooth, and accelerate effortlessly. All nice characteristics in future a Tacoma.

Probably never happen, but don't discount diesels because of unfamiliarity with them.

I discount them because diesel is now 35% more expensive in my area. Call me crazy I guess.

That is likely a temporary scenario

Who knows. Now would not be a great time to be bringing diesel vehicles to the market. The price of diesel is usually higher than gas and, other than some VW diesels, the mileage numbers for emissions compliant diesels have been falling.

I like diesel engines. I'm not sure they fit over here in the current economic environment though.

Diesel is usually at or near regular gas prices in most of Canada

I can see why that would influence your decision - it's about 25 cents higher than gasoline in my area. Price fluctuates across the nation.

I think the interesting thing is people will point to the cost of the fuel, or "I'll never save enough money in MPG, to make up for the potential increase in fuel cost." While both don't take into account the towing ability, and huge torque numbers of diesels. When it comes to buying something like a Camaro, which uses premium, and gets less than average MPG, the same arguments of fuel cost and MPG, aren't considered.

Another consideration is that we likely won't see a Toyota diesel in a Tacoma that's much of a jump over the gas version. If the new Tacoma comes with a ~280ish ft*lb gas engine I'd need to see at least 350-370 ft*lbs out of the diesel before I'd personally consider it. At that rating the towing would likely improve enough to really effect my decision making.

Also, last time talked with our local GM dealer about buying a Colorado for the wife, he suggested the markup for a Diesel will be somewhere in the 3-4K range. That's a lot of money if you're strictly looking from a fuel economy stand point, you could put that money towards a full sized half ton that will out tow a quarter ton truck all day long. I doubt Toyota will charge anything less for a diesel option.

I'm not knocking diesel. I'd love to see a diesel option available in the Tacoma. I just don't know if it's coming right now, and if it does will it be worth the extra cost?

^A diesel will typically have a higher resale value though, unless it's a complete POS. I think Toyota would be gambling with their reputation for reliability with a diesel though. Yes, I know, they've done diesel forever in other countries... but designing a motor that has the fuel economy and power perks - that also complies with US emissions standards while being reliable and affordable... yeahhhh.

Doesn't look like there'll be a diesel. The fuel door is the same size - no place to put DEF.

And if you saw the interview with the two guys from Toyota, the confirmed that no diesel was coming for the Tacoma. Made no business sense the expense associated to it (due to stricter emission restrictions coming) and the savings (or lack off).

At least the guessing is over.
