Diff. breather Mod - why?

I was reading where someone did this mod, and had a walk through of it. Whats the point of it?

 

.......... so water/mud/dirt doesnt get sucked into your read diff

 

The thought is that if you submerge the rear diff while off-roading, the breather vent will let water in and contaminate the oil. The diff breather mod raises the level of the breather vent higher than you would want to submerge a truck in water.

No prob. It's definitely a good idea plus it's cheap and easy.

 

I look for the water and the mud, and I have never done this Mod despite being told by several avid members to "just do it".. It has been eating at the back of my mind for a while, guess I will just do it this week.

 

Have you changed your diff fluid? If so how did it look after the mudding and water?

Never Changed it, never looked at it.. and I tow frequently.. My mileage has really started to suck lately and the truck just doesn't seem to have the same amount of power that it did. All the scenarios started running through my mind, and then I read this thread.. oops. Guess I will change it tomorrow hopefully (weather permitting). I have 10k miles on an 09.. so it is not "THAT" bad... ... ... I hope..

My last taco, I used that expensive hard to find amsoil.. think I am going cheap this time and using the Pennzoil synthetic.. suggestions?

 

This was @ 4k miles before my first oil change..

 

10k isn't bad at all assuming it's not mixed with water or mud.

Honestly I don't remember what brand I have in it but I know it's not synthetic. It was all autozone had in the correct weight. I'll probably go to royal purple next change though.

Best money I have spent, a tremendous amount of fun and endless amounts of entertainment. Plus, It's a great tool! Family Hauler, Towing Machine.. blah blah blah.. Love it! I really Cringed at my first scratch on the trail.. Now.. I Grinned pretty big when I smashed my front end hitting a deer @ 75mph.. I knew that new ARB bumper wouldn't take long to justify..

I changed mine after BVORR, I went through some pretty deep water. When I got home I changed out the diff. oil, Looked good.
