It'd be nice if you were right.

Took mine to the dealer and now I'm getting a new diff. Bad pinion bearing.

I'd wager the people dealing with this noise can tell the difference between tire noise and a diff howl.

At least I know I can. Lots of practice.

You sound like you work as a service advisor. It hilarious that you think the symptoms people post about with this howl are in anyway related to the tires.

And your logic is flawless:The tires hit the ground not the diff.

Sweet baby Jesus guys! Why didn't we think of that?? Noises only come from the parts of the car that touch the ground.

You pop into these threads and say the dumbest shit.

I think for some cases of noise you could be correct. Just had a lady in a Lincoln come in claiming she had a a front end clunk. The actual problem was a defective amp causing a speaker to pop. Some please haven't a clue what a noise is or where it's coming from. Some people like to just guess or assume. I'm not saying anyone here doesn't really have a a noisy diff, but I'm sure a few might be reading these and have heard some tire noise, and now assume they too have a noisy diff because "so many others" are experiencing this same issue, as people who actually have (had) a bad diff.

I've seen multiple people come in to our service department who claim they already know what the cause is, or start blaming someone for something, and in the end it turns out to be something completely a different component that they thought. This is why shops charge for diagnosis. Some problems take hours to diagnose correctly, if a customer rolls in saying yea I know I have a bad ball joint I need it replaced and someone replaces that because the customer told them too, then the customer still had the same problem after it was replaced came back bitching and they replaced a hub that was the actual issue, I'm sure most customers would be all pissed and not want to have paid for the ball joint they came in and told service to replace in the first place. Always kills me how some people get so pissed off because you tell them there is a diagnosis charge. Most shops won't charge you if they find the problem quickly or know right away what it is. Or in the end they just absorb it in the total repair cost, so if the job is a 4 hour job they will charge you 3 plus 1 hour for the diagnosis. Everyone always wants everything for free. But if they were the one having to do the work for free it becomes a completely different scenario

I've been here about three weeks now, or long enough to realize many people here have very limited knowledge about vehicles. I can only imagine what a service advisor or mechanic hears as far as what the "consumer" thinks the problem is.

The proper term is a couch mechanic. I try not to give too much mechanical advise because I'm certainly one of them guys. I know more about electrical than mechanical, but that's not really saying all that much.

Your assessment is spot on Lawfarin, and basically is my point.
Rear ends (diffs) don’t go out as a general rule to the extent that is being paraded on here by a few select individuals hell bent on trashing the vehicle and causing undue anxiety for helpless folks that believe all that nonsense.
And a journeyman tech with 20yrs of experience in the field would know were the problem lies without even pulling out the Bluetooth stethoscope from the tool box, and I suspect that lacking in experience is the reason some have had their diffs replaced more than once and the problem is still there.
But to reiterate, there will be a small amount of failures as in anything, but not like some individuals are trying to be portray it here.
It is entertaining to some point for those in the know, but cruel to those who “think” they have a problem

    Cheers!
