Diff issues 3rd Gen

So I brought my tacoma in for an oil change and told them I heard a metal whirring from behind. Later they call me and say they are replacing my diff under warranty and sending it to toyota

I will try to probe the techs for more info on what exactly happened but they said there were metal shavings in the differential. This is at 28k miles 2020 trd OR 4x4

Anyone know what this might be or if there is a TSB?

 

I know there has been issues of a whining noise associated with the 2016-17 models that Toyota supposedly says doesnt exist. Something to do with the preload on the drive yoke. I hear it on mine engaging, disengaging throttle at hwy speeds.

 

I remember a recent thread about a whining noise in the passenger seat, but not about the diff.......

 

The tech said either bad toyota diff or my 1 in add a leaf caused the issue. He said he saw bigger lifts without the issue.

I have a new diff now though. we'll see if problem dissapears.

 

i had metal shavings when i replaced my diff fluid at 500 miles fwiw

 

Typical, Toyota really screwed the pooch with their 3rd gen diffs. Noise, shavings, etc

 

He said I had metal chunks. Not sure the magnitude

 

I should have bought a jeep for reliability. not sure if I am joking.

 

I just had this done! Holy shit I thought I was the only one... no lift for me totally stock has been making the noise since day 1

Keep us updated... it didnt really fix my metal whirring issue... they gave me a one year warranty. Did mine at 55K by the way

I might bring mine back in...

2018 Grand Cherokee, engine tear-down and cylinder head replacement at 200 miles. And that was just the beginning. Got rid of it after 18 months and gladly took the $$ hit.

 

Well I heard no whirring noise with the new diff when I got it.

Last night I hear it again. Not sure if that means its bad. I will bring it in again......

 

I started to hear mine again too... just said to hell with it but now I may bring it in as well

Let me know if you do, and what they say I am curious as I dont know many of us who have this issue

I haven't had time. I am going to bring it in in january and drive it for now. I have to drive home for the holidays

Right on man! I have been driving mine, no issues just that damn metal whirring sound

Starting to think it may be a drum brake scraping or something... but my dealership did say they found some metal in my diff so I dont know now
