Diff Locker Question

    I actually am a big fan of the Detroit tru trck. Its a great LS/Locker. No clutch packs, all gear. ARB is nice. Personally, I like the Detroit becasue ther are no air lines or wires to break and leave you one legged.

    yepo! Thos elock rights can be LOUD! I was with a buddy of mine, and his lock right released and BANG!

    I spun around expecting to see a pile of smokeing truck parts, but he was fine, and moveing right along.

    Haha thats too funny. I would be ducking from shotgun shells if I heard that in a buddies car. I can't seem to find what detroit truetrac I need for my truck nor the price??? I emailed Eaton and they never replied and I called on Friday and they were closed lol.

    Im not sure. I ran one in my Dodge and was really happy with it. I kinda figured, as the Tacoma is a clearly superior truck, they would make it. May have to check with eaton. :confused:

    Well that sounds pretty promising for me. If its something around that price for our truck...... damn just show me where to sign the CC invoice! Much better than the price for the ARB air locker which only initiates when you tell it to and also has air lines etc etc.

    I don't get what you mean by there not all upside? I am also wanting to put the Eaton LSD in which is an automatic type. I agree not to do the lunchbox I know now how they are and have seen trucks take turns and hear the outside tire chirpin because its always locked. I think the LSD is the way to go IMO.

    If you have an ARB installed properly and you run the air lines effectively, you can have years & years worth of usage. I have two ARB's on my jeep and I've had them for 7 years of pretty hard & regular usage - they've always engaged when I needed 'em and I've never had problems with the air lines, ever.

    The quality of instal goes a long, long way with ARB lockers. Mine has been problem-free going on 2 years with it.

    On the e-locker thing, one attribute they offer over other lockers is the ability to engage (and disengage) them manually (with a screwdriver) if the solenoid goes out. But, for the life of me, I wouldn't want to tackle an e-locker swap on a new truck. Just seems like a logistics nightmare trying to procure all the right parts, and Lord only knows at what cost. Plus, you're talking one hella install.

    perfect timing for this thread as I too am lookin at adding a rear locker to my 08 DC Sport. I looked at the ARB but the air part makes me uneasy. if the line breaks or the compressor dies your SOL. Does anyone make an electronic locker (selectable) that fits the rear end? fixing a broken power wire on the trail seems so much easier to me :)

    ARB locker/air systems are well-proven, I assure you. Buy a decent compressor (don't build your system on the cheap) and it will last you a long time if you keep the filter clean and oil it on occaision.

    You can run SS lines if it makes you feel better. I carry extra airline, a fix-it kit and misc plumbing fittings, switches, wiring tools. The only thing I don't carry a spare of is the ARB solenoid. But other than that, unless it's an internal diff problem, there's nothing you can't fix with some fittings, new line and some thread tape. Plus, you can have on-board air, which is tits.

    Edit:BTW- I'm not completely sure of your rear locker options since you have the factory LSD. You might have to get a new carrier, I'm not sure.

    Exactly what Bill said....

    If a line breaks - you fix it. You carry spare airline, couplers, and fittings with you. If you can't fix it - that only means your locker isn't gonna work. Who cares? If you're not wheeling alone (cough, hint, hint), carry a tow strap or buy yourself a winch.

    Honestly? Fixing an airline is much easier than fixing an electrical line. When an airline breaks, atleast you can HEAR the air where its leaking.

    Yeah Bill - anytime you install an ARB, you're buying an entirely new carrier and probably gears & gearing setup too (unless you were referring to something else).

    Yeah, I meant the ring gear, sorry to confuse. I'm not sure if ARB uses the same locker (RD-89) for use in my rear (open) diff as it does for the LSD diff (meaning you'd have to change the gear since they are different sizes), or if the locker for the old 8" diff will work instead. And even if the old 8" carrier will work, will the gears? I really don't know since I didn't have that problem to deal with. The RD-89 slaps right into my diff (and gears), which is factory open on an SR5.

    EDIT: Or am I confused and the open and LSD are the same sized diffs with the e-locker being the odd-ball?:crazy:
