Note, I didnt say you "can't" do it. I said nobody has successfully done it and posted about it. If I am wrong point me towards the post.

On 3rd gen tacoma, per service manual and on-vehicle measurements, Toyota only applies 50% power to that coil when it is trying to lock, and 25% power to the coil once locked.

What will happen if you apply 100% power all the time, I dont know. Maybe nothing bad. No intention to test it with my truck... (sorry hijack OP)

No, this is great. This is exactly the conversation I was hoping to see! Thanks all!

The 50 percent pwm is just a way of controlling the current. Another way of controlling the current is with a resistor. You can use a relay to power the coil in series with a resistor without fear of burning out the coil.

I haven't seen it either and I didn't know that's the case because on my Harrop locker (same electromagnetic principle) it's just constant 12V.

So that's good to know. How do you know? If you have the wiring diagram plz post it up. Kinda want to figure it out just for the heck of it....
In that case it would probably suffice to add a resistor or diode or whatever voltage regulator you want. Pretty sure Toyota just drops it to 3V once locked to minimize power consumption. It would be safest but slightly more involved to use the locker ecu also - in addition to the one you already may have and if prerunner you got an empty spot just waiting for it. Ground out the signals so it thinks it's always in 4lo and under 5mph and hook it up to a switch.

If you dont have the original ecu controls to consider, will be easier, certainly.
Not saying it's hard to do, but not just 12v (to match toyota... )

In the truck bed with the inverter, air tank, and other stuff.

I will read that at some point. To get this sorta back on track it's probably easier to add the factory locker axle to a truck that doesn't have it than to hack the factory locker ECU because you just don't use it at all.
Just send 6V from a relay. Could even get creative and use something like a dimmer switch to dial down the voltage once it's locked though that likely isn't even necessary because different from 1st and 3nd gens there is no actuator motor that can burn up or jam
