I am trying to get my first Tacoma and I was wondering what major differences there are between 1998-2000 and 2001-2004 besides the facelift? Are there any changes under the hood or in the drivetrain?

I am looking for a 98-04 V6 4WD Automatic Xtra cab or double cab (prefer TRD but not necessary), but need to find it for less than $10000. Seems I can find a lot of 98-00 but all of the 01-04s are too much money. I am partial to the way the 01-04 looks but I wanted to know if the changes were all looks.

    Thanks in advance

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    Welcome to TW!!!!!!!!

Yep, pretty much just cosmetic and interior changes. They are have the same drive trains and motor combos also. If you havent heard about the 95.5-2000 buyback for frame perforation (rust) yet, do a search. There is also apparently something starting for the 01-04 trucks too.

Well, for one thing - the Double Cab didn't arrive until the 2001 model year.

Basic its just the face lift and the double cab option. Oh! and some interior things as well, like the face of the gauges are white on the 01-04's.

I am in Washington State and willing to drive about 5-6 hours to get one for a good deal. Are the gauges the same shape on the 98-00 as the 2001-2004? If so, could I swap the white faced gauges from an 2001 onto a 2000?

    Thanks

Got my 02 DC 4x4 TRD on craigslist, the good part they brought it to me, the even better thing, i got it for 8K, I practically stoled that truck, it did have 100k miles and a fender bender on the front chrome bumper, but took it off to see if there was any damage bc it sounded to good to be true, but luckily it was only the chrome part and bought the plain jane black for 50 bucks. In short just look around and be patient. GOOD LUCK

I don't think so. There are some slight differences in warning light locations. However they do offer white face gagues for 95.5-2000 on the the web
