does anyone run high octane, and if so is there a noticeable difference.

High octane should only be used if your engine specifically calls out for it's use or you are experiencing ping (pre-detonation). Other wise it is a waste of money.

You're going to get a lot of "no and no"'s and "yes and yes"'s with this thread, and a ton of arguing and BS'ing in between. Good luck

FWIW I run high octane fuel because supercharger. But I do know some people that run mid-high octane in their N/A trucks and swear by it

thanks, I ran it in my 03 chevy and it helped but it had 170,000 miles on it. I knew TW would set me straight.

After running full tank of V-Power my engine knocks like crazy. Can't say for sure if that is because of that gas but knocking increased a lot.
I got so mad that I went to look at tundras....:D:p:thumbsup:

I run 100% pure gas, 91 octane....I get over 25 mpg but it's also for piece of mind.

Technically it's probably not worth it penny for penny but it works for me.

I ran 93 octane in a Ford Ranger for a few years. Gas went up so I went to 87 octane. Truck acted like I filled it up with water. Guess they get used to the high test gas!

Toyota R&D has dyno'ed this new engine to death. Two-bits says thousands of hours.

If their data indicated it would perform better with higher octane, it'd be in the truck's manual and their advertised performance figures would reflect the added performance.

Or at least that's what I think...

    I use 93 non-ethanol.
If I used E10, I would still use 93 to insure octane, against water contamination(>10% ethanol).
Ideally, from a station that sells it on a regular basis.
Ethanol blends only last about 90 days under ideal conditions.

Why do folks think a higher octane rating will get you better gas mileage? The Octane rating reflects the timing of when the fuel will ignite. It has nothing to do with the amount of energy the fuel produces. Just saying.

If you want better gas mileage find a station that sells 100% gas with no ethenol. It's hard to find but in my experience my trucks get at least 2 mpg's more.

Ah yes. I heard Shell puts little people from Ireland in their gas and the little buggers run 10% faster than ESSO fuel's PQU additives. ;)

No. ECU and motor are set up to use 87 octane. Anything more is indeed a waste of money. However, what's not a waste of money is ethanol free gas or 100%. Gas has more energy in it than ethanol so you get less powerful explosions in the cylinder with ethanol mixed gas. Plus, if even minute amounts of water are introduced to gas containing ethanol, phase separation can occur. This can create problems throughout the fuel system. This problem is far more common in boats because the chance of water entering the system is more likely and boats often times sit for extended periods of time which makes phase separation worse.

Even so, most gas sold in the US is E10 or 10% ethanol so the difference between E10 and 100% gas is pretty minimal. Not like you'll notice a difference and if you daily drive your vehicle phase separation will never be an issue. 100% gas is normally 91 or 93 octane as well and significantly more expensive than E10 87.

I run 88 Octane, because the manual calls for min. 87 and low-test here is 86. I've found that when I run 86, the engine has a little less torque and doesn't hold a gear as well as with 88. Driveability is a little better with mid-grade for me, but I'm at 5000 ft of altitude. YMMV.

    Not to nitpick, Toyota states;
    -Minumum, 91 octane RON
-Does not recommend ethanol blend fuel

If contamination does occur, what happens to the octane of 87 E10 when its ethanol content drops below 10% due to phase seperation?
