    Is there any difference between:

    1997 4runner 4cyl 4wd automatic transmission

    -And-

    1999 Tacoma 4cyl 4wd automatic transmission

Spline counts, electrical connectors, length, size?

I don't think so. Should be the exact same drive line. Practically the same frame even.

You just need to compare the model number on the GVWR plate in the door jamb on the drivers side of each truck. Should be something like A340 or something like that. If they are the same, then it could work.

Just get a measuring tape and see if they are the same length. But the connectors might be different. My dad and I swapped a transmission and transfer case from a different year (92 maybe) 4runner to my sisters 93 4runner and the shift selector switch was different, the mount was different, and the speed sensor was different, just had to swap them over.

So basically what I'm trying to say is there is a possibility but you can't really tell till you have them on the ground side by side and make a comparison.

An this brings up a good point.

Needs to be the right era or 4runner. I think it's..3rd gen. Should be the exact same. Can't hurt to doubt check though.

Its 3rd gen (first year I think). The trans is already pulled from the vehicle so its the salvage yard word of 60K miles. It may just be a lil off on fluid level or something I"ll have to get it hot and check it or something..

Was a PreRunner, now it isn't
I put a 99 4Runner trans in my 02 Tacoma. V6 to V6 by the way. The only thing that I had to swap over from my Tacoma trans was the neutral safety switch, everything else bolted right up. Shift points are a little different, but i think i like it better.

96-00 are cable kick down and the 01-02 are electronic. Within the first segment there are also two different valve bodies, but I understand they should work and not throw codes.

Bumping the thread to see if anyone has any more input on the compatibility of 4Runner and Tacoma transmissions and/or different years of each (I.e. a 98 Tacoma trans in a 03 Tacoma or vice versa), interested in everyone’s experiences.

Shot in the dark on this ancient thread but has anyone attempted to put a newer A750F from say a 2018 4runner into a 2015 Tacoma? They both take the A750F but I don't know what issues might not be able to be overcame. The shift selector on the 4runners has "S+/-" and Tacomas have 4,3,2,1 so I don't know if the electronics will be compatible
