The hemi's have terrible blow by, too.

The pentastars (the 3.8's, I think) had sand cast cylinder heads. There were issues with sand working out of the head and damaging the engine.

The 2GR FSE is based upon a Toyota engine architecture that has been around for over 15 years now... and it is likely pretty close to being done. Included in this group are the TR series 4 cylinders, and the UR Series V8 engines. By scavenging parts from the Lexus F 2UR GSE V8, which had Yamaha's magic wand waved over it, some pretty cool 4 and 6 cylinder engines can be put together.

I've always wondered why Toyota didn't just add a 6 or 8 speed transmission to the 4.0. It was a really good motor.

Tacoma is a light duty truck...it's not pretending to be a HD truck!

    4 run, 2 don't
    They're not even light duty.

Quarter tons are, and the Tacoma isn't even a quarter ton.

In before someone says the Tacoma doesn't have a fully boxed frame (because it doesn't)

    Mostly dust and dirt.
Yet they are used as work trucks all over the world. Even with a frame that isn’t fully boxed.

Exactly, trucks that are half tonn or larger are a North American thing...everywhere else it's the "compact" Japanese trucks that rule the mountains, hills and sand dunes!!!

I've been driving the Rav 4 with the 3.5 for years and have always been impressed with it's performance. When I bought my Tacoma I was hoping for the same. It wasn't until I got the OTT tune when the similarities of the engines started to show. Now even with the added weight of the Tacoma it feel peppy like the Rav4.

My brother has a rave4 hybrid that goes pretty good for being around 220 hp, but its a lighter vehicle than a 4wd tacoma. For the most part i can keep up with him with the sr5 tacoma i have. Its a truck not a sports suv. I'm getting to get the idea some buy these trucks more on looks then expect v8 like performance.

The two posts above have answered the OP, and still there seems some are not getting it. IDK what to make of it.

As already mentioned, the 3.5L is just the overall dimension in size. The inside is where the magic happens. A truck engine is designed for a different task and duty cycle by the engineers who study and test these sort of things.

The camry or Sienna 3.5L would not last long slinging mud down a rot filled trail, if it could even go down and drive thru it, or climb a loose rock infested hill slipping and sliding.
By the same token, a truck cannot match the agility and comfort of a camry doing 95mph, because the build restricts it.

To put a car engine in a truck design to do a different task would most likely be a colossal engineering blunder and we have not seen that yet
