I thought when you turn off VSC in 4HI it turns it into open diffs rather than the limited slip function?

I use the auto lsd for sort of slippery starts on snowy roads. Pretty useful for me, I'm actually quite fond it. Sometimes it is all I need without putting her in 4x4. This might not help your question at all.

Where did I say turn off VSC?

The VSC button controls both TRAC and VSC.

    1) Quick push (stopped or driving) in H2 = AUTO LSD; in H4 (2012+) = TRAC OFF. VSC also goes off but only to 30 mpg, and then comes on. TRAC OFF (and AUTO LSD) is TRAC (traction control) without any engine regulation. Think of it as Regulation OFF.

    2) Hold in (while stopped) for 3+ seconds (in H2 or H4) = VSC OFF. Both VSC and TRAC are disabled but will come on in a dangerous condition.

Right... just like on My Cousin Vinny, in the mud! AUTO LSD is Toyota's "Posi-traction" system.

It actually works much better then I was expecting it to. And you can slide around pretty good with it too if you want to!!!

Ok thanks. I'm getting it now.

Now I have a 2011 4x4 Sport. I gotta go play with it a bit more... But what happens when I press VSC once when in HI4? Will it still say TRAC OFF?

Great, it is confusing until you lay it all out on paper! Toyota's names they use are not helping, either.

No, your truck is the same as mine (2010). It is automatically in TRAC OFF (as they call it since 2012), which is TRAC with the engine regulation turned OFF... ie. a stronger limited slip. In H4, no button to push or light comes on, is it does in H2. It is called 'TRAC' in H4 but is the same as AUTO LSD only on all 4.

They decided in 2012 to make H4 have the same choices as H2, so you will be in TRAC with regulation unless you press the button, as you do for AUTO LSD in H2.

For this reason, there was also a "Rugged Trail" edition that got you TRD Off Road features with matte flares. :D

Awesome man! Makes me so much happier to know I at least have something to help even though I couldn't get the Offroad with locker or a-trac. My front has a "limited slip" too! Woohoo lol.

In what conditions are you recommending using these options, when I push once while in park AUTO LSD and TRAC OFF Turns when I hold in for three second TRAC OFF and TRAC are illuminated, when driving when pushed AUTO LSD is illuminated?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the TRAC/VSC stuff like some of you; however, one reason I picked up the Sport over the OffRoad, is that I wanted all the options they both came with, which i believe were more inclusive than the base model 4X4 (not positive); while also needing the longer bed that was available on the Sport. I sacrificed the greater off road capability of the OffRoad for the longer bed of the sport, knowing that I could Lock the rear in the future on the sport. Getting a longer bed on the OffRoad was not an option back then, I don't know if they ever optioned the OffRoad with a longer bed after 2012.

Whatever the default is when you first turn on the truck is sucks, several times last winter when pulling into a snowy driveway would get me immediately stuck, a quick press of that button would dramatically help or so would obviously engaging 4hi

I too wanted the longer bed.. knowing I could change the other things up here and there down the road.

Can you clear up your question for me, I am not sure what you are saying or asking of me? Let me take a stab at them, with photos:

If you push once, it doesn't matter if you are in Park or Drive, moving or stopped.
In H2 you will go into AUTO LSD (which is the same as TRAC OFF). I am surprised you have both lights coming on together. My 2010 does not have a TRAC OFF light. The VSC OFF light is on only to 30 mph, then goes off.
USE AUTO LSD IF YOU HAVE TIRE SPIN when trying to move in H2.

2012+ 4WD Tacomas have TRAC OFF with a button push in H4. 2009-2011 it is called TRAC but is the same nonregulated traction as TRAC OFF/AUTO LSD. No button to push (they didn't forsee anyone wanting the weaker TRAC in 4WD).
    1-26-11012_2d80078b1525b690dafcfd6a9dc2af7b3e977e3b.jpg

If you stop moving and press and hold down for 3+ seconds (H2 or H4) you should have VSC OFF light... I NEVER USE VSC OFF (it makes my truck the same as my older one without traction control, ie. tires spin more). Toyota says to use VSC OFF to clean out tires with mud or snow. VSC OFF is also anytime you are in L4.

2016 is the first long bed DC OFF ROAD... in USA market, not Canada. The standard bed double cab is already too long behind the rear tires, I have damaged the back body and bumper more than once off roading!

    Yes, exactly!
Keep it in 4WD on snow when you stop or just remember to press the VSC button when you start the truck, because it auto defaults back to TRAC when you turn off the truck.

You answered my question I was getting hung up on the TRAC OFF light. I was confusing my self thank you for the information. When the Auto LSD is illuminated in 4H is the front differential also in LSD or just the rear
