    Hey,
I've read and re-read several of the posts about Brake Override Malfunction. My symptoms seem to be different, so if you have any insight, I'd love to know. Toyota did their diagnostics and found nothing.

I have a 2017 TRD Sport Tacoma. I first got this Malfunction right after I got the truck new. After disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes, It went away and came back last year a couple times. Now it's every day. I feel like my problem is the RPM's surging up as I'm on the brake. It happens a lot with the AC on, but has done it a couple times with no AC. It's like there are several little surges of the motor as I slow to a stop and then the warning comes on with the Check Engine and Trac Off lights. I had to limp into parking lots 6 times today on the way home to reset and get home. I did discover that I don't need to wait a length of time though. I can disconnect and reconnect my positive lead immediately and the problem is gone. I've also back into my garage with the Malfunction and warning lights on, and just went inside. The problem was clear in the morning with no battery disconnect. Even with no Malfunction, it's not uncommon for my Check Engine light to be on with the Trac Off light coming on and going off randomly. It's generally followed by the Malfunction at some point on my trip.

I have not changed anything on the truck. It's all original and while being diagnosed at Toyota they did my center rear brake light recall. It was happening already before that though. Any suggestions? Am I in the ballpark on the possibility of a surging while slowing or braking? Previous codes previous codes pulled included the Cam Sensors on each bank, but I haven't pulled them in a while.

    Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

It seems if the problem occurred 6 times in a day a good mechanic could attach a scanner/data logger to the OBD port and record the event in real time.

Your truck is out of warranty, you might have better luck with a good independent shop.
