 Hey guys, you the experts, I need your help. I have an 02 tacoma 4wd. 4cylinder, 2.7l engine. I did my rear gear swap about a couple weeks ago and my buddies are planning to go on camping in the next 3-4 days so I don't have enough time to do the front. now the rear gear is 5.29 and the front is 4.20 and my truck is a 4wd. I want to know if the gears are not equal in sizes is it going to harm the tranny or transfer case if I engaged the 4 wheel drive?. any inputs are big help. Thkx.

    DO NOT ENGAGE 4WD
Sorry for shouting but I wanted to make sure you heard me.
If you can't do it in 2wd don't go.

The front wheels and the rear will turn at different speeds with the non-matching gears. Things will break...It will be bad. Go ahead and pull the 4wd fuse from the box just to be safe.

The transfer case runs the front and rear drive shafts at the same speed, (when switched to 4 wheel drive mode) Since it's part time 4 wheel drive, there is no center differential like there is in an all wheel drive car (Subaru) so there is no way for the transfer case to handle the front and rear drive shafts running at different speeds, they're basically locked together. You will either break a drive shaft, a U-joint, the transfer case, your new gears, your old gears, one of the differentials, basically anything in the drive train could potentially fail due to the stress. That's why you need to have matching gears in the front and rear before putting your truck into 4 wheel drive.
