    Very first brand new truck
I've tried 87 octane and 91 octane with no ethanol and gas mileage was the same. I also tried 87 with ethanol and still the same gas mileage.

No matter what I do I get arround 19 MPG city and highway. This is taking it easy and babying the truck to get the best mileage I can

Anyone have different results with different octane fuels?

Shell 87, I average 18.5-19.5. If I drive it harder then its closer to 17 (v6 model since you didn't specify). Honestly don't care about the MPG though.

Octane won't make a difference in gas mileage. Pure gas may make a slight difference though. It produces more energy than E-10

    all tore up already
i always get 19.5-20.5 and use e10 87. every oil change it gets a tank of 93 and a bottle of techron. notice mpg goes up to about 21.5 for that tank. odd because i usually drive it a bit harder too with that tank

Same mileage with 93 but it surely accelerates quicker and more smoothly.

i wasn't a believer that it would make a difference on this motor, but i do get about 1mpg better on 92 or better. i have since reverted back to 87 only but there is a difference.

    Read my mind @smitty99
I love these threads. Like people love to watch a demolition derby.
    1. Octane, is a resistance to detonation under compression. Not a measure of power.
    2. Ethanol has roughly 10% less power than pure gas. So normal E10 has 90%gas-10%eth. Making a 10% of 10% difference. But generally a Non-Eth tank will give very slightly better mileage.

If you disagree with the above, (and feel free, it's the Internet) go ahead and start googling it. There is a lifetime of research on fuels. I'll start the Googling and informing now.

There is a difference in the gas, but the computer compensates for it. In my 2001 Wrangler with 4.0L HO straight 6 motor and no computer, 87 e10 gas got me 15mpg's. And non ethanol 92 octane got me 19mpg's. It was dramatic. There was no difference in Mpg's with my 2013 wrangler and Pentastar computer controlled engine so I always ran the cheapest gas I could find. I am putting tier 1 91 octane in the Tacoma, because I like the truck and want to give it the good stuff, but there is probably no difference MPG's wise. The Tier 1 gas is more important than any other consideration in a computer controlled engine with fancy injectors, at least that's my current thinking.

As for Mpg's with a v6, drive it like a 4 cylinder (grandma) and it will be good, drive it like a Ferrari and it will be really bad... :)

www.fuelly.com. Sounds like you're right in the zone. I do think that it's possible to get 20-21 out of these trucks, but it requires a very gentle foot, no hills, 55mph speed limits, and no stops. A tailwind might be necessary as well.

2016 Taco Access cab, off road, 3.5 with just over 2k miles.. I do almost all highway with lots of stop and go, approx 100 miles per day. Normal mode into work, ECT out acct congestion and I push it fairly hard. According to display I'm averaging 21.7 MPG and I only ever use 87 octane from the local Esso. As info.

DO you have a '16 Taco??

Using higher octane makes a difference at higher altitude as you loose 3%hp per 1k' of elevation above sea level.
Thinner air means less air to compress so you need less octane. Your truck is rated for 87 octane using higher octane is at best a waste of $$ that could go for better tires??
    Just saying...

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Mine works great with '87 top tier gas, never have used higher, but would consider using it below sea level

I've been a little curious about what different grades of gas will do to this engine ever since I stumbled across this early official training documentation that shows that the engine was designed for 91+.

I'm not expecting mpg gains, but I've been playing around with different grades of gas. I haven't been experimenting long enough to say for sure yet, but I think mine accelerates more smoothly with higher octane gas. Not necessarily more power or more efficient, just more smooth.
