The components, and where you screwed everything into, problems you ran into. Stuff like that.

Don't think so. The air box is up against the wheel well where it sucks air, so to do this you would have to rotate the air box 90* or close the old intake and cut a new one in.

Okey-dokey, fine, try and make me inform you will you! :p

Parts (price I paid), in order from grill to airbox:
o Volant ram air scoop ($100 used)
    o 4"/3.5" reducer ($12 O'Reilly)
    o 2 ft piece of 4" aluminium tube ($34 eBay) - used about 12" in two pieces (9.5" & 2.5")
    o 4" 90 degree silicone elbow ($20 O'Reilly)
o 2.5" piece of the 4" alum pipe
    o 4" Coupler ($10 Advanced Auto)

When I initially mocked it up, I thought that I could do without the 4" coupler and have the elbow come right off the air box (air box pipe is 4", Scoop is 3.5" though) to a piece of pipe and to the reducer on the scoop. As it turned out though the angle between the elbow and the scoop was too much (I thought that the couplers would bend enough to suck this angle up) and I had to add the 4" coupler off of the air box to a small piece of pipe, then to the elbow.

All of the silicone parts were Spectre (cheapest I found), and I tried to source 'em locally to cut down on time. eBay was the cheapest place to find a chunk of alum pipe. Vibrant sells some for intakes, but the cost is $50-60. I initally tried a chunk of alumized steel (exhaust pipe), but it was too heavy unless I wanted to put a support in place. Also figured steel would be too much of a heat soak.

If someone else is considering doing this, if you can find a place that can custom bend alum pipe, then you could get a 3.5" piece of alum, put a 4"/3.5" reducer on the airbox. and bend the pipe to run from the airbox reducer directly to the Scoop. This would cut down of the number of parts (reducer, pipe, coupler on scoop). If I hadn't miscalculated the bend, I would have at least 2 less parts involved.

Not the stock airboxes. On the 4 the stock airbox/filter is next to the wheelwell, on the 6 it's on top of engine.

That's freaking awesome! I love the idea of ram air intakes, and the fact that all manufacturers use ribbed plastic tubing makes no sense to me.

    Very nice mod, looks professional.

I'd point the spectre logos down, tho, so you don't look like a noob, lol no offense.

My 4cyl stock air cleaner is in the right front, just behind the washer reservoir.
I was wondering if the scoop could be modified to go into the stock air cleaner.

Lean means not enough fuel and too much air. Running HIGHER than normal A/F ratio means you're running lean. Running UNDER means it's RICH (too much fuel).

The MAF is in the same spot since he still has the stock filter and such. The MAF is "downstream" of the stock filter so no need to be moved. Makes this mod pretty easy- lots of credit to the OP!

I will be doing that. At some point I will either paint the alum, or wrap it with some sort of insulation, then I will either rub off the lettering or point 'em down.

Everything is modifiable, just a matter of if it's worth it. If you look at pics of the Volant intake and the scoop, you can get a good idea of where they are.

Also, I think I've seen a post where someone plumbed a pipe into one of the fendor airboxes (not sure if it was from a 4-cyl or an aftermarket). Might do some searching.

But, like I said way above. I don't like the idea of a multi-point intake as it's not clear to me that this would not cause the air flow to go from the scoop right out the fendor intake. I'm not sure what kind of pressure is in the fendorwell. Only way I personally would do this is if I closed off the fendor intake.

Lastly, on the 4.0 anyway, consider that if you don't want to invest in a scoop you could just run a pipe through the radiator wall, ala a URD intake, and see how that works for you. A cheap way to do this is Spectre has a 4" accordian rube that could be connected to the stock airbox and run through the radiator wall. Still an accordian tube, but might be worth a shot. Downside is you'd need to cut the wall.

I would be closing off the fender intake if I put the scoop on.

I was thinking about how to insulate the aluminum as well. Maybe something from a spray can? Whatcha think?

I doubt if I would use spray insulation. I was thinking of trying some wrap type stuff just to see if it really makes any difference. I.e., something cheap until I know it's worth it.

Yeah I just thought of that too. $20 bucks for a roll or so. Worth a try to me.

    air and fuel
The only gains that can be made from an intake are by removing the stock air box. If you opened up the box you will see how the air has to make a few very tight turns before it reaches the throttle body. This slows it down and creates some air turbulence. The whole point of the TRD/AFE/URD intakes it to get the air into the motor as straight and smooth as possible.

So by leaving that stock box on there, you have literally changed nothing about how the air moves into the motor. It's like the air-raid intake. Imagine trying to breath through a straw.

So I know you didnt want the noise of a real intake, but thats part of the equation. Performance enhanced cars are loud for a reason. There is nothing in the way of air going in and out of the motor.

    Sorry
