Differential LSD with lock?

My TRD Off Road Prerunner has an open dif with a dif locker. Do I have any option to replace it with a LSD with a lock as well? I'm tired of not being able to put power down and doing wimpy 1 wheel burnouts.

 

Do you mean open with electronic locker (abs controlled)?

Not really.
The closest you will get is a TrueTrac style differential.
It will be a lot better than an Open Diff, but won’t be “locked” on demand like the E-Locker.
The TrueTrac is self locking, so it will take a bit to get it locked.

BTW, I know exactly what you are talking about.
Us 05-08 guys are open or locked. We didn’t get the Auto-LSD.

 

09 & up... is lsd done by applying brake to loose wheel or actual electronic/mechanical diff lock?

 

09+ use the brakes to simulate an LSD (even the E-locker trucks)
All 09+ trucks are open differential.

 

Do you know if this is the way 4runners are also. Open diff for 2wd and 4wd with brake induced autolsd / atrac.

Google says all 5th gen 4Runners have Open differential and operate just as the Tacoma does.
Maybe @Empty_Lord or @Bishop84 will know “for sure”

No 4runner has had traction enhancers on their differentials. The diesel hilux used to have it.

5th gen is open with simulated lsd or rear locker.

 

Unless they're confusing things with ATRAC?

Really, just having a rear e-locker is the bees knees. Why change it?

 

@Kwikvette the confusuin is in part because T says the 4r has an automatic lsd, and there is no further mechanical info given. Also, did you read the first post twice? Post 4?

 

What year 4Runner are you asking about?
Just curious.

Further research says the only the 2WD T4R uses a brake actuated LSD.
The 4WD T4R uses the center diff for “LSD”.

LSD would make sense for the OP though for sure if he doesn't want a one wheel peel.

 

edit3, what a mess of a post. Those vids below are for older 8" diffs, and newer 4runners have 8.2" rears apparently. Idk about tacomas. More reading to do.

yeah that's a worm drive style and a clutch style available to drop/swap in to 8" axles it seems. I am gonna dream real good tonight. OP I don't know how the locker is set up but I don't think you can get what you want. Maybe with some butchery you can put your locker up front and roll lsd rear (no idea status on that one).

 

If I understand this correctly OP you are saying, when you operate your vehicle recklessly you want a rear locker so you can peel rubber with both rear tires instead of just one tire. You are asking for our help to assist you in your reckless driving endeavors. Just clarifying if I’m understanding you correctly? Are your parents aware of your driving behavior and habits?

 

Yeah, I over looked that part.
The only reason I know what he’s referring to is because I have an 07’ and pulling/backing a trailer in wet grass can be a pain in the ass. Once the wheel spins, it spins. If your lucky, you don’t damage the lawn too bad. I just stick it in 4H now and keep the turns at a minimum. Or park in the road……

 

That's assuming a lot, I live in a high rain and snow environment in a car with no 4wd

I assume nothing. You state you are tired of doing one wheel burnouts, meaning you want to do macho 2 wheel burnouts.
Perhaps it was poorly worded, or you didn’t mean what you said, or you need to improve your prose, or more information would have clarified what and why you are asking. In any event it’s not worth pursuing, get yourself a Detroit locker and go for it.

 

Swap in an older 8.4” axle housing and differential, replace the clutch packs, slap an arb in there.
