I am trying to find out how often I need to change the oil in my differentials and transfer case. I have a 2009 without limited slip. When I look through the service intervals on the Toyota website, I see that the limited slip oil should be changed every 30,000 miles. I can't find anything on the non-limited slip. Does anyone here know for sure?
    Thanks

    Too few to list.
Same. 30K for the rear without the true LSD and I believe 60k for the front (if you have 4wd).

lol, I don't need to hear things like that. Whoever had my truck before took excellent care of it, but the dealership they used apparently never brought up to them to change the diff fluid. It got it first change @ 94k when we bought it.

I guess all I can do is hope that maybe the guy changed it himself or took it to a shop that didn't report servicing it to carfax. Dealership didn't come out and say "Damn son!" or anything. Just serviced it and let me go.

If it helps anything, it was probably an easy 94k. Doesn't look like it was ever taken off road and the bed liner never had a scratch until I put one on it.

It's like oil changes...easy to do yourself, so why have the dealer do it.

I am not dumb by any means, but accident prone. This is especially true when attempting new things. Learning new things on something I'm paying for for the next 4 yrs makes me even more nervous about trying it.

Lol. I'm the same way. Have someone show you how to do it. It's idiot proof.

    Park on level ground
    Take out fill plug
    Take out drain plug
Wipe off drain plug (check for larger shavings to predict possible problems)
    Put drain plug back in
Fill until it starts to come out.
    Replace fill plug

If you can change your oil, you can change your diff fluid.

I tried changing mine last week, but couldn't get the damn pill plug off. I didn't want to strip the bolt (came off a couple times while torquing it), so I stopped. I sprayed it with wd-40 and that didn't help. Any other ideas???

I'm think about waiting until September and taking it to someone to avoid stripping the bolts. My inspection is due then and i hardly drive my truck (have a work vehicle I take home). I REALLY don't want to pay someone to do it though.

Couple Q's: Since I'm operating on the assumption that my diff fluid wasn't changed at all before I got the truck, would it be advisable to Chang the fluid again in a few thousand miles due to gunk buildup?

is it normal to have some metal shavings?

It wouldn't hurt anything to change it after a shorter interval. Check it at your next oil change and see how bad it is. If you need to change it, do it. If it's okay, change it around 20k.

Small metal shavings are normal. Larger hunks are not. Anything bigger than a peice of rice, I would be concerned.
