Alright local folk, I'm toying with the idea of regearing. Since I went to the 255's my mileage has taken a serious dump. Taller, heavier, blah blah. I knew it'd suffer but got 'em anyways.

What I want to know is: what local shops do good diff work that's not outrageously priced? I usually do all my own work, but I don't have the time or proper tools to feel good about doing gears. I was thinking it'd be around $1,200ish but 4wheelparts in Tacoma wants $2,900! I about choked.

No!! Don't do 4wp!! You can call ecgs (east coast gear supply) and they can build you a third member/clam shell so all you have to do is a straight swap and send yours back..

Or go to just differentials in cashmere and I've heard tons of good things about them. I know it's a bit of a drive but it is worth it I've been told

This man is correct, 4WP is a bunch of idiots that overcharge. However, just differentials in Cashmere is the place to go, the guys there deal with lots of Toyotas and are cool to talk to.

I think they specialize in Toyota gears too versus jeeps don't they?

Pretty sure that's where they got their start, with Toyota gearing. They are pretty big in the world of axle gearing now. Toyota had them as their sponsor for some of the Baja races too.

Appreciate the lead for Just Differentials! Sounds like a solid shop. Cashmere is a bit of a drive, though. Not sure if I can swing that with the work schedule.

Definitely wasn't planning on going to 4WP. Just wanted to see what they were charging. Figured it'd be high, but not THAT high.

Any other reliable shops out there a bit closer in? Heard great things about Rears & Gears out near Port Orchard, but I called and he told me he doesn't do front axles anymore? Not sure why.

That's odd.. I know mule expedition outfitters in issaquah can do it but their price will be high.. Expect great work through them though.
Another place is torfab (Toyota off road fabrication) I haven't been there but heard good things about them. They are in Muklteo.

If you were doing one of those 2 places I'd see if ecgs can build you an assembled third/clamshell and have one of those shops install it. It'll cut your labor costs dramatically since it's a straight swap versus having them build it

Thank you for the suggestions, guys! Just got back from a few day trip to north Idaho. Truck did awesome in all the snow but the mileage on the highway left a lot to be desired. Even up slight hills the truck was constantly downshifting into the powerband.

Guess that's what you get when you add bigger, heavier tires, heavy armor and less aerodynamics...
