Okay. I had a pretty good deal worked out on a 2023 TRD Off Road, but after seeing the release of the 4th Gen, I am thinking maybe I should wait and get one. I like the simplicity of the 3rd Gen, but what concerns me is the resale value. It looks like the new Tacoma is going to offer several things that the 3rd Gen was lacking (more efficient transmission, low end torque, better technology, etc.). I don’t know that fuel mileage will really be that much difference. Just look at the new Colorados and Canyons. Almost the same fuel mileage ratings as the current Tacoma. I just do not know if I like the idea of buying a new truck and then in less than a year it is “old news.” Help convince me one way or the other. Thanks in advance.

I don't think I'd worry about resale on either generation,,, not when compared to other used vehicles anyways.

EDIT: who really knows WTF they are going to charge for the new gens ,,, referring to out the door pricing, not MSRP.

If you are already in a 2022, why bother upgrading to a 2023? Wait it out and see.

Sorry. Just updated my profile. I bought my 2022 new for under MSRP and sold it not too long after I got it for over MSRP. That is why I am looking at getting another Tacoma.

What is your situation? Are you driving anything now? Can you buy a beater to fuck around with for a year or two? Or do you need a more reliable vehicle? Do you need a truck for work? If you can wait before buying a Tacoma, you will have more access to reliability information about the 4th gen. Plus, if you end if not deciding on the 4th gen, you will still be able to find a used 3rd gen to buy.

I will never understand people that buy and sell daily drivers so often, but I live in California where you get fucked with taxes when buying any new vehicle. You should have just kept the 2022 IMO.

Driving a beater now. Saving up money. Glad to see someone is keeping up with my business so closely. I am flattered.

Actually, there are some things that worry me a little. Turbo 4 cylinder. From what I have seen in the GM twins (full-size and midsize), the fuel savings isn’t really there. I cannot really decide if I am sold on the looks yet either. According to the Toyota website the TRD Off Road will have a horrendous air dam on the front now. Really not something I want on vehicle that I am actually going to get off the pavement. And last, but certainly not least, price. With all the new “upgrades,” that cost most definitely will get passed on to the customer.

Keep the beater until the 4th Gen is out long enough for initial problems to clear, and to let the losses from your multiple purchase/sale level out.

Or just buy the 2023, live with it for afew years. Because some people are already convinced of what you are just a little worried about ... too much techno-garbage for a mid-sized off-roading truck.

BTW ... the 25 in TV they parked in the cab of the 2024 is a major issue with me as I do not like the far-too-busy baby screen in my 2022 OR.

    1. There will be no fuel savings, even with the hybrid. SOURCE: I have a hybrid 2023 Tundra. 17MPG. Lots of power though - that thing MOVES!
    2. Horrendous air dam can be ditched with a (I assume) 10mm nut driver and a few minutes. Toss it in the shitter. Problem solved. Lots of belly aching about that spoiler, SMH.
    3. Price: Hahahahah bend over. If you want price, you'd better try to negotiate a fire sale price on the 2023 leftovers, if that is even possible. If you wait for 2024... well...

My $0.02 - advice worth exactly what you paid for it!

Imo, it's never cool to buy a 1st year new model. Toyota isn't what they use to be in the last century. If you really don't need a new truck, i'd be waiting a few years not trying to be one of their test pilots.

for anyone that needs to purchase a new truck with the intention of keeping it for a long time and is considering the tacoma, get the current model.

while some of the changes to the new gen are an improvement on paper, i do not think it will change anyone's life for the better. besides, some of the design both inside and out are over-done. as someone mentioned above, the flat screen sticking up out of the dash is a no-go for me. the engine compartment looks like someone cleaned out the leftovers from an estate sale and is headed to the landfill.

it is safe to say the new model is going to have quite a few growing pains. it'll be entertaining to read about the disappointment. :)

toyota used to be the go-to for simplicity, reliability, and affordability. can anyone really look at the new gen and envision a reliable truck for two decades and 250K miles with only basic maintenance cost? they have changed, and not for the better as i see it.

good luck with your decision. i got to go yell at some kids to get off my lawn.

    I’d wait for a 28.

The 23 is old news. 24 will be the first iteration of a new model and they won’t have all the bugs worked out. 25 will be plagued with new fuel efficiency standards and will be weak and powerless. The 26 is more of the same, but with cool new colors. The 27 will solve the fuel efficiency problem with the Carbon XT electric cells (not invented yet in this timeline), but won’t have neural integration.

The 2028 will be the best option in the next 10 years.

Normally I would stay away from the first iteration of a new generation of any vehicle and the fact that the 3rd gen Tacos are solid and a lot has been worked out . . . the 2023 would be a no brainier. But since the OP changes trucks at about the same rate Taylor Swift changes boyfriends . . . yeah I would say buy both a 23 and then a 24.

I could have waited to buy the 24 as I purchased the 23 in November 22. Several reasons: I had seen the new Tundra body style and assumed they would make it look similar; I like the lack of technology-no 12 inch screen, sensor's on every body panel. As some people have suggested; You don't by a brand new model of a brand new truck, you wait a couple of years and let other people figure out their flaws first.
    Wait for the 28!
