Just buy whatever is bright n shiny every 6-12 months! Tell everyone how cool it is when you get it, then tell everyone how bad it was after you sell it off, rinse repeat.

Resale value? Take a look at what any generation Tacoma goes for. Yes, right now we are in odd times but even pre-Covid, Tacomas led the way on resale value. Sounds like you want a 4th gen so get it. But I would be more concerned about first year issues with the 4th gen than 3rd gen resale value.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
4th gen will be around for at least 8 years and will go through several refreshes and "package updates" throughout its life. I think anyone will have plenty of time to buy into it. Based on sales stats alone, I doubt dealers will have trouble offloading remaining 3rd gens (both new and used) so I wouldn't worry about resale value. For the very solid aftermarket parts and tune availability, I think the 3rd gen will rule a bit longer after 4th gens start hitting the streets.

Wonder what mechanical goodies the 2.4l engine will throw in terms of things like coolant bypass and timing cover leaks 2nd and 3rd gens are known for.

I will worry about my finances. Trust me, they are well in order. I don’t need any help on that front. I do not know why it bothers some people so much. Jealousy. Envy. I have no idea. I am sorry. I do not understand. I have no concern of what someone else does with their OWN money. I just want opinions on the outgoing model and the incoming model and why a person might choose one over the other. Thank you in advance.

I plan on keeping my 17 until it completely dies then I'll consider getting a newer version.

TFS not very friendly at the moment.

Bought my 2023 Tundra in March. Obviously no supply, very high demand truck, got allocation last November for my truck and waited for the "privilege" of paying MSRP. For the non-spoken for trucks that showed up the dealer wouldn't budge off $16k upcharge for wheels and a crap spacer lift.

Just setting the stage for how it was 2 months ago at your local friendly Toyota dealer, and how I predict it will go for Gen4 on rollout.

TFS stated 8.99% APR for 60+ month financing. This is with my 850 FICO BTW. Even the F&I guy was embarrassed and said I'd be better off elsewhere. Of course, was already lined up with credit union so no worries there.

For funsies I asked what TFS lease pricing was, wondering if that might be cheaper way to go to save my "massive" down payment.

$1,600 and change per month for three years. With $5k down.

That didn't even warrant a response.

Obviously YMMV when it comes to the gen4s, but I suspect after the 2 recent Fed interest rate hikes since March it may not vary THAT much.

toyota is copying porsche very closely in the marketing department these days. which is fitting, since porsche copied toyota's production philosophies to dig themselves out of a hole in the 90's. new generation every 7-8 years, facelift every 3-4 years. trickle out new features and design during the lifetime of the generation, deny problems until they become brand-impacting, limit new halo sales slots and play the hype game with slick marketing product launches in exotic locations. it wouldn't surprise me if both companies use the same brand consultants.

i wouldn't buy a new halo product from either one in the first year. that is -- if you can even get a build slot and/or find one to buy off the lot. just cool your jets, buy an older truck, enjoy it until they work out all the kinks and all the gotta-have-it-now buyers are gone and then swoop in a couple years later. at that point the aftermarket will have a healthy amount of products offered as well.

as a general note though, there is always something newer and better just around the corner so trying to time a purchase based on what's coming or what's hot is kind of pointless.

9%?!?! Holy crap. I thought 6% (which is what I’m on with a CU) was bad. I’m over 800 too and bought in Jan.

Correct, we live in an age where many have to have to latest greatest and many of those are willing to finance a vehicle for eternity.

That right there is funny stuff.

Doesn't re-sale only matter if you are a short term owner? Either a keep up with the Jones's type or just easily bored?

Ah yes. The answer to the concern on the re-sale value.

Well, thanks for doing your part in stimulating the economy!

People have very funny ideas about the resale value of vehicles and it only got worse when Covid temporarily warped the market. Look, all vehicles are depreciating assets. Age, wear and tear, and dated technology make them less valuable in the future than they are today. Sometimes there are exceptions for rare models, but otherwise this rule holds for all brands.

Toyotas have a reputation for depreciating more slowly than other brands, but they do depreciate. And there are so many silly stories about them. I've seen people brag that they sold their First Gen Tacomas for the same price they bought them for in the late 90s / early aughts. Well, thanks to inflation, the purchasing power of a dollar is about half of what it was in the 1990s, so those sellers really sold for 50% off. That's still impressive considering how fast other cars depreciate, but it's significant depreciation nonetheless.

We really don't know how the market will treat the Third Gen as it ages. There are a lot of loud know-it-alls on this board who think the transmission or some other factor will cause its value to plummet faster than other Tacoma generations. It's definitely possible, but then again the market might forgive the transmission because future buyers really want V6s. Those people really do not know because only the market and time can tell. I recommend ignoring all of those voices on this subject.

Instead, try to think of buying a car as a consumption decision, not an investment decision. Is having the latest and greatest really important to you? Are you willing to take on the risk of owning an early model year? Is the new technology important to you? How long are you going to keep the truck? What can you realistically afford? Answer these questions and weigh how much of your money you are willing to spend and that will tell you what you should do.

yep. 3rd gens are now worthless.

everyone, i'm making an official offer for your truck. $10 each for immaculately-kept trucks, $8 for anything with scratches/dents.

My 2017 is SO worthless I gave it to my teenager! I am sure it will have scratches and dents soon enough and won't even be worth $8.
