    The dimmer works by varying the negative ground potential. So for the new switch ground you need to locate an "illumination ground" which is not the same as a ground ground to metal. ie: the cargo light/door switch has both a switch ground as well as an "illumination ground" (tan wire IIRC). This is the wire you need to ground the illumination on your new switch so that the dimmer knob will work correctly.
