So then if you want off-idle power, you get a supercharger. Simple.

    @rjbiii

Smallest usable turbo I'm sure many people would recommend would be a gt2860 or the "Disco Potato" as it was called.
Quicker spooling can also be achieved with a GTX series 28XX if you want to spend that much extra for 300rpm spool difference.

To each his own. Everyone has a different need for forced induction.
I personally dislike superchargers, but that's just me. I don't need to make boost starting at 750rpm lol.

Crawling and 4-lo applications, you totally should go supercharged.

Leaning towards the 2871R like you have. Seems like a good balance of pretty quick spool up and a good amount of top end power potential.. Pretty much always live above the 2k rpm range unless im starting out in first gear, so I think drivability will be pretty good still. Just looking for a little more power primarily to have fun with, but also in case I ever need to use the truck to tow something decent sized.

Just recently installed the LCE dual comp clutch and lightweight flywheel, so at least I wont have to fool with the transmission..

I can make boost in 1st gear leaving a stop sign/light and such. It's great when it's wet because you can hit 2nd gear tires already spinning and spin through to 3rd. The 2871r is an awesome turbo and the perfect size.

The dual comp clutch will hold the power- it's what I have. Grabs nice and hard, and my pedal pressure actually DECREASED from installing it. So that made me extremely happy lol. I was used to my ACT 6-puck on my Subaru, and it was like having leg day every day hahahaha

Thats awesome! Sounds like a nice bump up in torque as well, even with just 5-6lbs.

I am running 4.88s and 33s so im thinking it will feel quite peppy with some mild boost.

Seems like a great size to me as well. I just want the truck to be able to get out of its own way, and it is my first truck, so i dont want to get rid of it. Sounds like a good excuse to throw some boost at it.

I also noticed that the pedal pressure decreased. I just put my dual comp in about a week ago, and i thought something was wrong with it at first because the pedal was so soft. It grabbed hard like you said though, and it hasnt slipped, so i chocked it up to the new pressure plate. I did notice that the springs on the dual comp pressure plate were smaller than the springs on the OEM clutch. I am guessing this has something to do with the pedal feel difference. I do like it though nice and easy to drive. I was used to the URD stage 3 in my 6spd before i installed this one. The clutch pedal is verrry firm on that one, so its like a night and day difference switching between trucks now.

I saw you had the factory flywheel resurfaced. Is there any reason why you didnt go with a lightweight one? I put the LCE lightweight one in my truck and it has been very easy to adjust to. The 4-5 shift rev hang is absolutely terrible now though. I have only ~350 miles since everything was installed though, so perhaps the ecu needs to learn and adjust to the lighter flywheel

I've had lightweight flywheels on previous cars and hated it for daily driving in NY traffic. Revs would drop way too quickly if I wasn't beating on the cars every time I went to shift. I figured I'd rather the heavier OEM flywheel so it can hold revs longer between shifts. If I lived in a much more rural area, I'd probably have gone with a lighter flywheel.

Also keep in mind that turbos spool under load. If you’re cruising at 40mph in 4th gear (just an example) on a flat surface, then come to a hill and keep the throttle at the exact same position, as you ascend the hill the turbo will spool with no additional throttle input.

This applies to larger tires with stock gearing as well. Taller tires will cause the turbo to spool lower in the RPM range due to the increased load on the engine.

Same applies to a heavier truck, and with towing. More load generally = faster spool. You really have to think about a lot of details when trying to size your turbo to the vehicle.

I’m not saying you’ll be pushing positive pressure at 1krpm, but you should get into boost quicker.

I also agree with the fact that different turbo sizes (primarily exhaust housing/wheel combos) will significantly impact where you begin to make power.

OP- very cool build. Almost makes me wish my 07 DCSB was a 4 banger!
