I understand that a Turbo can and will hit max boost faster than a SC, because it's not limited mechanically by the motor, but I'm curious how one can start spooling any faster. It's probably a nitpick, but I'm just trying to make sure I'm not missing some obvious thing in how both FI methods work.

A small A/R turbo can hit target boost of 7lbs at probably 3k rpm and control boost to redline with the wastegate (too small A/R will turn into a choke at high revs though) vs a SC that would be up near 4-4.5k to get 7lbs. Turbo boost curves aren’t linear but for the most part SC boost curves are.

Does that sound right? @allmotorrex @Robertocritser @beertimecontinuum @ anyone else who knows anything about rear lockers for split use lol

    GTX 3071r @8psi...
I can make 5+ psi by 2k RPM. The wastegate preload on mine is set a little lighter to start opening sooner, just because I'm on stock fueling right now. For a turbo to spool, you need to place load on the motor. Just revving it won't make any boost, whereas a supercharger will make some boost. The torque curve from a supercharger is much more linear than a turbo because with a small turbo like my 2871r, it can spool MUCH faster to make 6psi than the URD or any supercharger can at that RPM. The difference is for me to make 6psi, I'd really have to be on it. Now if I'm climbing or in a mud hole, that's giving me the resistance I need to build the boost level without moving much. Turbos can also take advantage of brake boosting, which can be helpful when you need to maintain a given speed but build boost. If it's a manual trans, you can also shift up a gear to "lug" it a little bit and build boost that way. With the supercharger, you get the extra torque "on demand" which is usually enough to get you out of whatever you're in...the turbo torque curve comes in a little later (depending on turbo size) but ramps up much quicker.

Is this biased? Nope. Not from someone who's "got a poll to make it turbo fanboy central"
I totally agree that for MOST situations, a supercharger would be the way to go for wheeling on a plethroa of vehicles. But our 2.7 motor can only safely handle about 400hp before the internals need help (pistons specifically). Being a large 4cyl, we move a good amount of exhaust volume so pairing it with a smaller turbo like a 2871 helps down low.

It's really dependent on the type of wheeling, where you want your power to start coming in, and how quickly. A small turbo, or supercharger would both work very well for this truck.

Is a supercharger less maintenance than a turbo? Nope. They both have their maintenance intervals.
Do they get just as muddy as a supercharger would? Yep. It's in the engine bay...so if it's getting in the bay, it's getting on the turbo or supercharger. Turbos just dont have to worry about belt slippage if anything is wet. You can use the same filter box on a supercharger or turbo, so that's a moot point in itself.
Would a turbo get too hot? Nope. My 2871R is oil and liquid cooled. I've been going to the beach a lot during these 95+ degree days at a crawl and it's fine. Coolant never tips 196 or higher (stock t-stat).
Clutch issues? Yeah. If you go supercharged or turbo, you're gonna need to upgrade your clutch. The stock Aisin isn't rated for much more torque than factory. So a supercharger will still "murder your clutch." Torque is torque. It's gonna slip at a given torque level.
Why do baby turbos sound like queefs? Why do superchargers sound whiny like a kazoo...moot point. You can get any sound you want with the proper BOV.

My advice? If you want that little extra oomph, and have a complete solution which is great for wheeling...go with the URD supercharger kit. It's brainless to install, maintain, and the tuning is done for you already. You'll have better luck down low when wheeling, and the torque curve would be higher thorughout the range.

If you want to go turbo, be prepared to do a lot of legwork (or ask me questions) and get real familiar with self-tuning. There wasn't a ton of fab work that had to be done, but I had to drill a hole in my block above the oil pan to install the oil return fitting. I had to weld the MAF flange to my intercooler piping- to which I had to find the correct flange myself. I had to cut some IC piping to route it correctly. I had to buy a piggyback ECU and install it myself- there's no plug and play patch harness. I also had to learn how to tune that myself.
The turbo was a lot of work: researching, mapping it all out, and testing things that hadn't been done. The installation was the easy part lol. But the payoff of having a turbo tacoma when no one else does is worth it to me.

    What’s your question?

If you’re going to wheel, you want a locker not a LSD.

After talking to Gid and Levi, I'm going Powertrax Lock Right. Done. Settled.

    Clutch next week
    Locker next month, or earlier
    Winch in October, or earlier
Girz, next year or Christmas present to myself

Who makes the yummy greaseable LBJs? Got a torn/squirter on driver side. Will go ahead and do full replacement of LBJs, alignment cam bolts, and bushings. Moog for bolts, Whiteline  for bushings.
